Ira Clinton Hetrick, 85, of Smethport,, PA

Ira Clinton Hetrick of Smethport, 85, went home to the Lord on June 8, 2010 surrounded by family. He had been ill for an extended period and critically ill for two weeks.

Born March 31, 1925 in Huntington County to Blanch (French) and Walter Hetrick, Ira's family moved to Amberson Valley when he was 4. He attended Fannett Township Schools in Dry Run and left high school in 1943 to join the Navy. He served as a gunner for two troop transfer ships involved in the invasion of the Philippines. Ira was awarded his diploma in 2005 in a ceremony recognizing the contribution of WWII veterans.

Following military service, Ira worked construction on the PA turnpike and then at Letterkenny Army Depot while farming in the valley. He transferred to the Army Corp of Engineers to work as a maintenance mechanic for Tionesta and East Branch Dams. He retired in 1980 to Smethport.

In his younger days, Ira was well known for his baseball skills, especially pitching. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, whose heart was never far from the outdoors he loved.

Ira is survived by his wife of nearly 65 years, Ilo (Young) and six children: Linda O'Laughlin, Oregon City, OR; Darlene Walker, Salt Rock, WV; Clinton of Tionesta, PA; Richard of Sharpsville, PA; Leonard of Marienville, PA; and Dianne of Chambersburg, PA. His nine grandchildren are: Brenda Nicklas (wife of Todd), Sigel, PA; Andrea Glenn, Salt Rock, WV; Robert Walker of Barboursville, WV; Nathan Hetrick, Madison, WI; Joshua Hetrick, Medford, MA; Jonathan Hetrick, Columbus, Ohio; Kendra Gilbert (wife of Gerrid) of Austintown, OH; Melanie Walker, Huntington, WV; and Katie Hetrick of Sharpsville, PA. Great-grandchildren are Chloe and Taylor Glenn of WV. He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters Janet Piper and Grace Miller; infant son and daughter; and son-in-law Gary Walker.

Ira recently reaffirmed his faith in Jesus Christ, our Lord. Services will be held at Laurel Grove United Methodist Church, 17697 Amberson Rd., Amberson, PA 17210 on Saturday, June 12, 2010 at 11:00. The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 11:00 prior to services at the church. Interment will be at Amberson Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the above named church c/o Judy Clayton, P.O. Box 69, Amberson, PA 17210 or the Salvation Army or the charity of one's choice. Is this the Hetrick that lived on Open Brook Road? Anyone?

Our condolences either way, but the Hetricks on Open Brook are neighbors and very friendly.
