Pennsylvania State Parks - the Best in the Nation
Pennsylvania's 117 state park system competed with the best systems in the country, and was awarded the top honor as the 2009 National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association.

This prestigious award honors the Bureau of State Parks for its skill in planning for and managing its diverse state park system, and also for its innovative approaches that have drawn people into state parks in new ways and connected them to nature through outdoor recreation.

The Gold Medal Award, presented every two years, is the highest honor a park system can receive. Winners are determined by a panel of parks and recreation professionals that evaluate application materials highlighting excellence in long-range planning, resource management, citizen support systems, environmental stewardship, program and professional development. Emphasis is given to addressing the needs of those served through the collective energies of citizens, staff, and elected officials.

Pennsylvania will carry the prestigious title of Best in Nation until the next medal is awarded in 2011. This designation honors the hard work of the men and women of DCNR who work tirelessly as protectors of the land, recreation providers, models of best practices, conservation advocates, and as educators of the future stewards.
