Ellen Shinn Explains Program For Potter County Jail Inmates

Anonymous said...

I am all for it! I have seen one too many repeat offenders in this area and would like to see them get some help so that they can try to live normal lives!

Let's just throw more tax dollars at everything. Seems like it'd be easier to just go to jail and get free training. How bout we have a program where working folks keep their money?

To 10:05 poster...

If it were just that easy. Having served as a volunteer in large and small prison environments, my experience has been that 80%-90% are decent people who made really stupid decisions - for a lot of reasons. I don't know about you but as a working person, I want to see these folks OUT of jail, EARNING A LIVING and PAYING TAXES so that I don't have to foot the bill. It's called an investment. I'd much rather see some of my hard earned dollars spent on making this happen for more inmates and less on those who spend the rest of their lives in jail because they don't know how to take care of themselves.

Admirable socialist goal, however way outside the proper role of Constitutional government.

It is more the role of the family, churches and private sector.

Onward we march to a great democracy, while sucking the life out of every decent taxpaying citizen it can. .

And save your "good for society" tagline, it's not the proper role of government.

Just because it feels good or is good, does not mean you should rob one man for the perceived or real benefit of another.

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money from the Public Treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits from the Public Treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy always followed by dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been two-hundred years. These nations have progressed throught this sequence: From bondage to spiritual faith; from spiritual faith to great courage; from courage to abundance; from abundance to complacency; from complacency to apathy; from apathy to dependence; from dependence back again into bondage.”
—Alexander Fraser Tyler, 1700

At some point the quality of life between living off of the system vs contribute to it becomes marginal enough that people lose the incentive to be productive.

My vote may not count for anything, but if I retire early and take an under the table job the lack of taxes I pay will count.

Starve the beast.
