Gloria W. Burns, age 81 of Chambersburg, PA and formerly of Clearfield, Gettysburg, and Port Allegany, PA

Gloria W. Burns, age 81 of Chambersburg, PA and formerly of Clearfield, Gettysburg, and Port Allegany, PA; passed away in her home on Tuesday, August 17, 2010. Born November 5, 1928 in Clearfield, PA, she was the daughter of the late Robert Welch and Evelyn R. Wilson Welch Mather.

A loving wife and mother first, she was the family homemaker, "taxi driver" ,and "car pool organizer"; and she was employed as an administrative assistant and bookkeeper. Mrs. Burns was an active volunteer in every community she was a part of; she volunteered in the Port Allegany school system and the Public Library. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Port Allegany and the Rotary Ann organization of Port Allegany. Her passion for reading, led her to volunteer in the Reading is Fun program. In addition to reading, her interests also included bridge, (especially Library Bridge) knitting, and quilting.

She was the beloved wife of 62 years to Paul M. Burns, whom she married on November 26, 1947; loving mother of Bonnie Sandel (husband John) of Milford, CT; Jeanne Crawford (husband Charles) of Towanda, PA; and Paula Fink (husband George Douglas) of Fayetteville, PA; cherished grandmother of Drew Paul Crawford (wife Holly) of Charlotte, NC; Stephanie Jeanne Crawford of Atlanta, GA; and Alexander Jerome "A.J." Sandel of Milford, CT.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, August 20, 2010 at 2 PM in the Fleck Center at Luther Ridge, 2998 Luther Dr., Chambersburg, PA 17202; where her son-in-law the Rev. Dr. John S. Sandel will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be private.

If desired, contributions may be made in her name to the American Parkinson Disease Association, 135 Parkinson Ave., Staten Island, NY 10305 or to the First Presbyterian Church of Port Allegany, 12 Church St, Port Allegany, PA 16743. Arrangements are entrusted to Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA.
