God's Country TU Project Healing Waters designated “National Destination Event”

God's Country TU Project Healing Waters designated “National Destination Event”

After a recent national meeting of Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, it was announced that the event sponsored by the God's Country Chapter of Trout Unlimited qualified to be designated as a “National Destination Event.”

This means that the local event is being added to a national list of fishing destinations where a nominated disabled veteran from anywhere in the United States will be able to attend the event along with regional disabled veterans.

It was also confirmed that Navy Captain retired Ed Nicholson will personally attend next years local event to be held for the fourth consecutive year at the Big Moore's Run Fish & Games Preserve. Captain Nicholson founded the Project Healing Waters program at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC in 2004.

The program was initiated by using fly fishing and fly tying as therapy for wounded warriors returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and has expanded to include disabled veterans being treated at VA hospitals throughout the country.

National Program Director David Folkerts is also expected to attend. David was wounded in Iraq and attributes much of his healing to Project Healing Waters. He loved the program so much the he accepted the appointment as program director when Capt. Nicholson requested he do so. Both Ed and Dave expressed their desire to see in person how such a wonderful 3 day event event can be put together by such a small TU chapter!

Ray Markiewicz, Northeast Coordinator for Project Healing Waters since 2007 stated,” the God's Country Chapter of Trout Unlimited, it's volunteers, Roy and Cathy Magarigal -owners of the Big Moore's Run Fish & Game Preserve, and the beautiful people of Potter County deserve this recognition for putting on one of the finest events in our program.”

God's Country TU president Dr. Pete Ryan expressed his feelings about this honor by saying how thrilled and excited the chapter is about this announcement from the national organization, but that the real honor is the thanks we receive from our disabled veteran guests for providing them with such a peaceful, memorable and truly healing experience in God's Country.

Project Healing Waters is an all volunteer not for profit organization, learn more at projecthealingwaters.org.
