Homemade Amish Root Beer Is Summer Treat

Homemade root beer appears at scores of roadside stands

Like many of the tourists on visits through Lancaster County, Richard Boyd of Annapolis, Md., has never tasted homemade root beer.

He doesn't even know such a thing exists beyond the canned, commercial variety, with its pumped-in carbon dioxide, found in grocery stores and soda machines.

At the Amish-run Country Store and Miniature Horse Barn roadside stand outside Strasburg, the 61-year-old federal government official hoists a dripping, unmarked glass bottle from an ice chest and steps into the farm lane.

He tilts his head in the glaring sun and lets the brown liquid trickle down his throat.

"That's really good!" he pronounces with confidence and a smidgen of glee. "I like it! It's very refreshing."

He turns to his two daughters. "Try it, it's yummy." More...

I'm sure in Lancaster County the stand had the proper license, and the product had the required label.
Not like in Potter County.
