Katie Lowe Tells Experiences At Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Camp

Karen Cahilly, Katie Lowe, George Hults

Coudersport – 8/9/2010: Katelinn Lowe put her leadership skills to action when she manned the podium at the Coudersport Rotary Club regular meeting earlier today. Katelinn attended the meeting to present an overview of her experiences at the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Camp (RYLA) held this past July at Juniata College in Huntington, PA.

Katie was one of the two successful applicants chosen to represent the Coudersport Rotary Club at RYLA this year. RYLA is a competitive leadership program that consists of a one week seminar called Camp RYLA where students learn leadership skills by participating in team building exercises and community service and leadership projects. This year, 66 youth from over 30 communities across Pennsylvania and West Virginia attended the camp.

The Coudersport Rotary Club looks for two candidates ages of 16 to 18 who have a good academic record and involvement in school activities (athletics, fine arts, student government, etc.) to represent the Coudersport area each year.

According to George Hults, Rotary District Assistant Governor, “It not enough for students planning to attend college to merely have good grades anymore. Our students must get involved in activities that distinguish them from the thousands of A/B students applying to college each year.”

Katelinn is the daughter of Tammy Spears and is enrolled in honor classes at the Coudersport High School. She has participated in piano recitals in both Pennsylvania and Ohio and is one of Rotary’s Students of Tomorrow.

Also attending the RYLA camp this year was Colton Gerhart, son of Terry Gerhart. Some of the activities in which Colton has participated are the National Honor Society, District Choir/Regional Choir and Drama Club.
