Genevieve "Gene" Wharton Geise, 99, a former long time resident of Olean and Allegany NY, most recently of Chapel Ridge, passed away Tuesday, September 7th, 2010 at The Bradford Regional Medical Center.
Born July 5, 1912, in Bradford, a daughter of the late Thomas Henry and Helen (O'Mara) Wharton. Gene was the seventh child of a seventh child, born in the seventh month at the seventh hour.
She graduated from St. Bernard High School in 1930 in its largest class of 80 graduates. It was held at Shea's Theatre on June 15, 1930. An Alumnus of the University of Michigan, she enjoyed a varied business career with McCort Label Co., Zippo Manufacturing, the Pennsylvania Department of Public Assistance, the New York Department of Labor, she owned and operated Geise's Grocery on 8th and State Street in Olean, and retired as Post Master after 21 years with the St. Bonaventure Post Office.
She was married October 28, 1939 in St. Bernard Church by Msgr. David L. Hickey to J. William Geise Sr. who died on January 11, 1980.
Surviving is one son, J. William (Ilona) Geise Jr. of Falmouth MA, one daughter, Helengene Wilson of Florida, two grandsons: J. William Geise III, and Andrew Geise, two granddaughters: Betsy Geise-Dolan, and Katie Scarlett Wilson-Ahmed, Six great grandchildren: Ben Lohman, Will Dolan, Carl Geise, Maggie Geise, Omar Moynihan Ahmad, Kate Dolan, and several nieces and nephews.
At the family's request there will be no visitation. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service at St. Bonaventure Chapel in Allegany at a date and time to be announced later. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes Inc.
