Even kids know Gays cause trouble

First Person: Gays cause trouble
Even kids know that ... because that's what they're told

My first college boyfriend had the misfortune to be named Billy Dee Bailey.

He was a senior. I was a freshman. We met in German class, but he said he liked my joi de vivre.

We were going to Transylvania, a very small school in Lexington, Ky. Thirty-six hours after our first date, most of the student body knew we were an item.

It came as a surprise to a few people who had thought that Bill was gay.

I can understand why they might. He was an English major, soft spoken and fond of poetry. He hadn't dated much in his college career, probably because at Transy, social life revolved around Greek life. Bill wasn't the kind of guy who went to fraternity keggers.

I can't say for sure what his sexual orientation was, but he certainly kissed like a straight guy.

Bill never had any trouble at Transylvania, until he started dating me. Then his buddies harassed both of us. That's what friends are for.

Everybody at Transy pretty much knew everybody else. Some of the students were gay. Some were obvious about it. Nobody ever bothered them. More...

Of course, there's a difference between a political figure who says gay marriage will cause the world to collapse and a gang of middle school bullies who hound a classmate because they've decided he's gay. The difference is that the political figure has a larger audience and more money.

It has always been easy to find a small group of people and blame the world's problems on them. Jews, Catholics, Baptists, Quakers, Freemasons, Chinese, Irish, Native Americans, African Americans, the disabled have all been singled out as a danger to the rest of us.

Somehow if ... fill this space with the group of your choice ... would go away, all our problems would go away, too.

It's a nice, convenient idea that has caused a great deal of misery to mankind.

Schoolchildren today, even young people at a prestigious university like Rutgers, know that gays cause trouble. That it's all right to torment them, because they aren't like us. They're somehow less than we are, and conspiring to make the world a worse place than it is.

They got that idea from adults. Those adults have a lot to answer for. More...
