Gordon J. Irons, 89, of Rew, passed away, Thursday, October 28th, 2010 at the Lakeview Senior Care & Living Center in Smethport.


Born December 12, 1920, in Wetmore Twp, he was a son of the late William Ellis and Katherine (Fitzgerald) Irons.

On July 12, 1943 at the First United Methodist Church in Bradford he married Elizabeth "Betsy" (Armstrong) Irons who survives.

Mr. Irons was a 1939 graduate of Otto High School. On February 4, 1942 he enlisted in the United States Navy he served during WW II in the Atlantic Convoy Duty and the Pacific Theater, he was honorably discharged on October 23, 1945. He worked as the Foster Township Road Supervisor from 1952 to 1956. In 1956 he went to work for Kendall Refining and in 1983 retired as a maintenance supervisor.

He was a member of Rew United Methodist Church, a member and Past Master of the North Star Lodge #555 F&AM, Coudersport Consistory, Zem Zem Shriners of Erie, Tuna Valley York Rite College #76, Bradford Royal Arch Chapter #260, Commander #58 Knights Templer, Bradford Council #43, R.&S.M., and the McKean County Shrine Club. He was a charter member of the Zippo Archery Club and Smethport County Club.

Surviving in addition to his wife Betsy of 67 years is, a daughter, Diana Lynn Irons of Martha Vineyard, Mass, one son, Gordon D. Irons of Smethport, five sisters: Mary Lou (George) Gigliotti of Bradford, Ruth Boyle of Duke Center; Lowanda Livak of Salamanca, Isie Iona "Peg" Irons of Atlanta, GA, Ella Elizabeth (Robert) Kaczmarek of Duke Center, four brothers: Gilbert (Pricilla) Irons of Duke Center, Francis Fitzgerald of Sheffield, Thomas (Barb) Irons of Bradford, and James (Mary Lou) Irons of Eldred, three grandchildren: Jeremiah Armstrong Brown, Naomi Elizabeth Brown and Reuben Fitzgerald Brown, three great grandchildren: Michael John Maynard, Christian Anthony Flanders and Violet Elizabeth Southwick, and thirty five nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, William Irons and Rex Irons.

Family will be receiving friends on Monday November 1, 2010 from 4:00pm to 7:00PM in the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes, Inc. East Main St. where funeral and committal services will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, November 2nd, with Rev. Fred Moore, pastor of Rew United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Grimes Cemetery, Port Allegany.

Members of Northern Star Lodge #555 F&AM will conduct a masonic service at 7:00pm Monday in the funeral home.

Memorials, if desired, may be made to the North Star Lodge #555, or Shriners Crippled Children Hospital 1645 8th St. Erie, PA 16505.
