Santa goes to School?

Santa goes to School?

It is true. Pete Wyatt a resident of Coudersport recently attended a very special School4Santas in Torrington Connecticut and received his degree in “Santaclausology” from the International University of Santa Claus.

Joining other “Real” Santa’s and a few Mrs. Claus from the region and surrounding states Pete began his preparations for this year’s Holiday Season by attend the two-day school taught by forty-year-veteran Santa Tim Connaghan.

Pete learned there is more to being Santa, than just wearing a Red Suit and sitting in a chair. During the special two-day school he learned a great deal about “The Business of Santa Claus,” as contained in Connaghan’s book, “Behind the Red Suit.” Subjects covered included the details, safety and today’s protocols of working with and handling children.

Santa Pete reports that this training was very “in-depth,” covering not only the basics, but many other subjects. At the school’s conclusion he was also inducted into the School’s Alumni Association, The Red Suit Society.

“We learned a great deal including how to welcome children, correctly hold them and pose for photos and the correct ways to talk with children, including what to say and what not to say.” Pete added, “We also learned about answering difficult questions, working with special needs children & families, the history of Santa Claus, proper grooming and appearance, and how to maintain a proper Santa wardrobe.”

Other subjects covered at the school included making appearances at special events, entertainment & presentation styles, and the basic business aspects of being a Santa.

At the completion of the School4Santas all graduates received a BSC, “Bachelor of Santa Claus” Diploma, conferring a degree in Santaclausology. Those who were attending for a second or third year received “Master of Santa Claus.

Each year hundreds of Santas, Mrs. Claus and other holiday professionals and volunteers, attend one of the many regional schools presented by Connaghan, who has been referred to as the “Chancellor of IUSC.” A 1967 stint as Santa, while serving in Viet Nam, has led to an unusual but fascinating career leading to thousands of appearances at events including Coca-Cola’s 75th Anniversary kick-off, and annually appearing as the star of the Hollywood Christmas Parade.

Along the way, he has enjoyed appearances on the Today Show, Deal or No Deal, the Hollywood Christmas Parade, Dr. Phil, the Tonight Show, and in advertising and commercials for such clients as J.C. Penney, Hallmark, HoneyBaked Ham, K-Mart, Kraft, Old Navy, Oreos, Planter’s, Ritz Crackers and Target.

School4Santas is presented by The International University of Santa Claus and is the only school that travels to different cities across the U.S. and Canada. Each summer from 8 to 15 schools are scheduled in cities across the U.S. Class sizes average around 20 and to date almost 2,000 have graduated. Today, the IUSC is the largest annual Santa Training School in the World.

When I saw him the other day on East 2nd Street I really thought he was Santa Claus. I thought I could see it in his eyes. It's amazing that we have someone like this in Potter County. I cannot wait until Christmas!
