HARRISBURG -- Contractors have been identified, environmental impact tests have been performed and schematics have been drawn for water lines, but the Corbett administration today pulled the plug on a $200 million prison construction project in Fayette County.
"The project has been canceled in the best interest of the commonwealth," according to a letter dated today and sent to two construction firms that had expected to work on the project.
The letter was signed by Sheri L. Phillips, acting secretary of the Department of General Services.
The letter was briefly posted on the department's Web site but was hastily removed when reporters, legislative aides and others began asking questions.
The proposed German Township prison would have served 2,000 inmates and created 650 jobs in an economically strapped region, said state Rep. Tim Mahoney, D-Uniontown, who pushed for its construction. More...

Then you can stop putting minor offenders like pot-smokers in jail.
And always remember, when I blow my nose you may think it's funny, but it's snot!
Good news! - people will lament about the jobs being lost, but those were simply more government jobs that are paid for by our tax dollars!!!
A lesson has been learned,

Our wallets have been burned,
So if they're axed, we'll hardly miss 'ems.
