Lawrence Arthur DeRock, of Fort Myers, FL, Bolivar Native

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Lawrence Arthur DeRock, of Fort Myers, passed away Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011, at the age of 85 at Hope Hospice House in Fort Myers.

Born in Bolivar, N.Y., he was formerly a resident of North Carolina living in Lexington and Lake Norman.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Paffie.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Mary Ann; his brother, William (and Connie) Earl of Pendleton, S.C.; brother-in-law Ronald Paffie of Bolivar, N.Y.; sister-in-law Betty Craig of Detroit, Mich; his sons, Dennis (and Elizabeth) DeRock of Loganville, Ga., and Gregory DeRock of Huntersville, N.C.; daughters Suzanne (and Lloyd) Jones of Salisbury, N.C., and Tina (and Stuart Haas) of Huntersville, N.C.; stepdaughters Kathleen (and Bobby) Sweatt and Lisa (and Jay) Young; stepson Butch (and Kay), all of Lexington, N.C., and stepson David (and Maria) O'Choa of Charlotte, N.C.; 19 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was a service engineer with Weyerhaeuser Paper Company. After retiring, he moved to Fort Myers, where he was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church. He was also a member of American Legion and enjoyed woodworking, bird watching and his family.

He served with the U.S. Marine Corp in the Pacific during World War II. He received the Purple Heart as a member of Death Rattler Squadron VMF 323, where he remained an active member until his death.

A private memorial service will be held in Fort Myers on Feb. 19.
