Corbett Blasts Penn State Complaints On Cutting Funds In Half

Corbett blasts PSU president’s complaints about funding cuts

SCRANTON – The hair seemed to bristle on the back of Gov. Tom Corbett’s neck when the question was asked.

In a brief press conference after his address Thursday to the Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce, Corbett glared when asked about his proposed budget cuts to state colleges and universities.

He was asked to respond to Penn State University President Graham Spanier’s comment that some, not all, of the budget cuts would be placed on the backs of students in the form of tuition hikes. More...

“If people don’t agree with me, then they will vote me out in three years,” he said.

He took several minutes to address his opposition to a severance tax on natural gas drilling.

“Everybody says the gas companies won’t go anywhere because the gas is here,” Corbett said.

“Let me tell you – capital is mobile and equipment is mobile. We are in competition with several other states that have natural gas reserves. I want to keep those jobs here; I want those companies to commit to Pennsylvania.” More...

Please keep the jobs here! It is only fitting to ruin PA with unregulated drilling since on the World News this morning...are ya ready for this? Of the top ten "at risk" nuke plants PA has three of them...So long PA :(

What does penn state have to complain about? They get hundreds of millions of dollars in donations from alumni every year! Are you kidding me !Just this past year one person gave the school 85 million dollars!

"...I want to have total control over those companies so I can load my war wagon with all the booty I can! You idiots think I'll get elected with no gas money comming in to my campaign? If I refuse to tax the gas companies, and make the citizens of PA do without the things they're used to from the state, I can surely have enough money to get reelected, and if I don't, then I'll keep that money and have it for myself.
Furthermore, if I use this opportunity to punish education and teachers, who opposed me and backed my opponents, I'll be making sure they suffer. The kids? Screw them!! This is personal!!"

Old 'One Term Tom'-- the guy who screwed everyone he could, just because he could.

Can we survive 3 years with him at the helm?

OK, let's see now Tom, N.Y. doesn't allow drilling nor does M.D...so? Where are they going to go to get it? TAX EM... you're sure not afraid to tax us!

And let's not forget townships tripple dipping on their dual (tri) use roads that they allow..or plow themselves down to the dirt for gas co. use. Yes,they take my realestate tax money, they agreed long ago to take money from the ATV and snowmobile registration funds then along come the gas companies and they allow them to bond the road and the heck with snowmobilers and the revenue they bring to the businesses they access via these roads. Can we have our money back?

This is our state not yours. We get taxed for everything we do. What makes you think we don't have a say in taxed natural resources that come from OUR state. Land of the free? Yeah maybe for the government. And to them we are just pawns to protect only their interests! It's time to take back our state cuz just like Paul Revere warned, the British are coming! And they well over stayed their welcome here.

Well it is about time that Government cuts spending instead of raising taxes. Who would ultimatly pay for any gas tax? You the consumer. If you want to go to college, then PAY for college. Why should the tax payers pay one penny for a higher education anyway? One values things more the harder they have to work for them.

Let's tax, the timber industry, tax the timber trucks for using the township roads and bridges...Also let,s tax the use of the game lands for hunting, fishing, hiking, skiing etc....Let's also tax the local groups that dig leeks for fund raising events. I think we can find enough ways to pay for everyones petty little desires though taxation.....
I think when you look at all the revenue generated by the gas industry through state, local taxes on the property owners you will find this industry is kicking in many dollars through existing channels!

The arrogance of our new Governor is shocking! In view of the $836,000 he got from the gas industry (Scarnti only got $117,00), he has no credibility in the eyes of this Republican. He speaks for the gas industry, not for Pennsylvanians who are trying to make ends meet and send our kids to college. What a disgrace! I am a very disenchated Republican.

Arrogance ?You must be thinking of fast Eddy Rendell! 2:39 is right on!

Anonymous said...

wow, so our taxes go to pay everyone's "petty little desires" ?

well what the heck? no one's been paying for my petty little desires, i thought taxes went to roads and schools and stuff....

2:39, please teach us more oh wise one.
you seem so knowledgeable and are in no way dumb as a rock

Most of them are outta state workers. So why keep these companies here, natural gas will alway be needed. Corbett you are such a " simpleton" to believe if we tax it they won't want it. It would also give native drillers a chance to grow. Here I thought you were the smart ones. We are on to your greedy games.

"Let's tax, the timber industry, tax the timber trucks for using the township roads and bridges"...Shows just how much you know...THE TIMBER INDUSTRY IS TAXED AND HAS BEEN FOR YEAR.....You should be asking the state what they are doing with all the state timber sale money, the hundereds of thousands of dollars PER YEAR!

"If you want to go to college, then PAY for college."......
Amen to that, our child qualified for not one darn dime...why? Because we have worked our asses off for over 30 years and have a little something to show for it...
