Fort Cherry Rolls Over Coudersport 61 to 42 At Clarion

Merckle Magical; Fort Cherry rolls

By Mike Kovak, Staff writer

CLARION - Midway through the second quarter of Fort Cherry's PIAA Class A second-round game Wednesday night against Coudersport, Rangers point guard Jessie Merckle headed toward the bench for a timeout.

Waiting for Merckle was Fort Cherry coach Bob Miles, who greeted Merckle with a high-five. A smile as wide as Clarion University's Tippin Gymnasium lit up Merckle's face.

The junior had plenty of reasons to be happy. Her jump shot had just put Fort Cherry ahead by 14 points and the junior almost outscored Coudersport - one of the state's most potent offenses - by herself.

Merckle's explosive performance led Fort Cherry to the PIAA quarterfinals for the first time following a 61-42 victory over the District 9 champion Wednesday evening. More...

We are so very proud of the Lady Falcons. Thanks for a great season. When Coach Green pulled the starters in the final minutes and they came off the floor, all of the Coudersport fans gave a standing ovation and chanted "Dildine! Dildine"! It was a moment we will never forget. Thanks again for all of the thrills. This was a special group of young ladies and they will go far in life.

I agree. That little guard for Fort Cherry couldn't miss. We stood and chanted and clapped for the girls as the last hurrah. It was funny to hear that chanting echoing in the rafters.

I was in the student section for these playoff games and the people from town who turned out to join us really made us feel good. Kids always get run down on here but we're not all troublemakers. When you people from town joined in shouting dildine dildine and clapping and cheering it really made us feel like the school is part of the town so thanks!
