Investigative Report On Pennsylvania's Broken Prison System By Patriot News Reporter Donald Gilliland

Hard time for taxpayers: Pennsylvania's broken prison system and how to fix it

Fixing Pennsylvania's broken prison system

By The Patriot-News

March 02, 2011, 9:13PM
Last year's report was striking. The U.S. prison population declined for the first time in nearly 40 years, yet Pennsylvania led the nation in adding inmates.

But it gets worse.

Since 1980, state spending on our prisons has increased six times faster than spending on our schools. One Pennsylvanian in 248 is now behind bars, yet we are no safer.

What is the problem? More importantly, what is the solution?

For six mo
nths, Patriot-News staff writer Donald Gilliland plunged into the world of prison reform. In the end, he discovered an astonishing consensus about what works -- because it has worked. Now, Gov. Tom Corbett and a Republican-controlled Legislature give Pennsylvania its best chance at prison reform in a generation.

Will we seize the moment?

Or will we continue to waste billions and billions of tax dollars?

The State is becoming such a toxic dump that we may just want to put a big fence around the whole darn thing and rent it to the feds and the other 49. Our state forests are being cleared, the water fouled, and the air destroyed; I really don't care too much about the state of the prisons.

one mistake ! prisoners have more wrights than you and I . lets start the chain gang up an tax them jail birds . they can work for use for a while .

Well if DG gets his little hands on this he'll make it to something that "he" wants it to be. Oh, and the next thing we'll see is prisoners being housed right in our own communities - you know, we have to rehab them all. Like, enough is enough. As for DG - not worth the words.

This entire series of articles sems like an utter waste of time. The newspaper wasted a lot of money paying the reporter to restate the well-known facts of prison problems.

Our schools are puting out grads with honors that can't read or write yet our prison inmates are getting free educations and job training.

@11:40 What school is putting out honors grads that can't read or write?
It's bullshit like yours that makes me sick to my stomach.
I'll bet you $1000 right here right now that you can't show me one honors student from around here that graduated that can't read or write.
Put up or shut up!

see where are tax dollers are getting spent on . this world has to wake up.

DG just likes to hear himself talk. Hey, maybe he'll give himself another award. Kids can't do a damned thing without a calculator or computer. Just try and give them something to fiure out in their head - whoa!!!!! It's a really trip. I know a junior in High School that doesn't even know what the names are of the months in a year. Hell, when asked he/she/it said, "I'll gust Google it Dude."
BTY - he/she/it is an honor student - go figure!

Oh, cripe.
Give credit where credit is due.
DG made some real missteps around here and hurt people with his poison and his biases but that was then and this is now.
I have read this work and it is outstanding
Time to move on, people.

meybe if he/she/its mother or father should have stepped douwn an taught something insted of sitting on computer allday . come on kids are only as smart as the mom & dad .

12:19 you can't be for real! Over the years i worked with some Austin grads that couldn't read, write or for that matter sign there own name properly! And yes they were honor grads! 1:45 really?

Say what you want by DG will never be up to any good - glad he's gone. Oh, by the way, he does come back occasionally just to try and make waves. Doesn't work though.

... grads that couldn't read, write or for that matter sign there own name ...

LIE & get x-tra money for your school. heaven forbit that we fail or hold back a kid. no kid left behind & drug free zones are a joke. wisc idea begins to sound better every day ...

3:06 I am an Austin grad. I can read, write, and sign my own name. Seems you may want to take a class on the difference between the usage of the word there or their in a sentence. So it seems to be very apparent that you yourself lack the intellect to correctly express yourself in your own words. Until this is accomplished please refraine from commenting.

7:32 good for you NOT!

@ all the 'not able to......'

$1000 for an honors student who can't read or write still stands......

PUT UP OR SHUT UP

Anonymous said...

to 3:06 : I am an Austin graduate and I also know how to properly use their, there and they're. So, put up proper grammar or shut up! Every school has graduates that aren't capable. It's the system, not single school.

9:04 name people really? can you say lawsuit? Then again it's austin my kid doesn't pass i will file a lawsuit! My kid doesn't play on the team i will file a lawsuit! My kid isn't going to graduate i will file a lawsuit! My kid didn't cause any trouble to prove it i will file a lawsuit! on and on !11:39 you just said it all with your last two sentences! Now tell me more about grammar!

Anonymous said...

3:14....It's the system, not A single school. Excuse the typo please in the previous post. Did they leave out capitalization and punctuation in your school?

Anonymous said...

3:06 Should have said that it was the system and not singled out a school by name. I have to agree with the 12:19 post, that there are no Honor students graduating that cannot read or write. I do agree that the public school system needs some re-vamping. Maybe 3:06 should run for a School Board seat in their Dist. in the May Primary. Just saying?

You are a teacher 12:19. Aren't ya?
Wanna check my grammar? Oh, wait, teachers don't check papers or grammar anymore either. They have the students check each others.
Soon everything will be taught over the internet and YOU will be out of a job. Save the tax payers some money at least.

@8:36
$1000, cash money.
Show me one, just ONE.
Should be simple, shouldn't it?
Unless you're just here to bust on schools........
Put it up or shut it up.......

And I don't see any takers.........
