Ruth B. Saunders, 92, formerly of 260 Main St., Richburg, NY

RICHBURG, NY - Ruth B. Saunders, 92, formerly of 260 Main St., Richburg, passed away Wednesday (March 23, 2011) in the Genesee County Nursing Home, Batavia, following a lengthy illness.

Born March 14, 1919, in Buffalo, she was the daughter of Edward and Anna Raps Bergman. She married Floyd Saunders on Dec. 19, 1942, in Richburg. Mr. Saunders preceded her in death in 1978.

Ruth was a graduate of Riverside High School, Buffalo, in 1936, and received her bachelor's degree in education from Buffalo State College in 1940. She started her teaching career at Bolivar Central School for one year, and was employed by the Richburg Central School as a middle school English teacher for 30 years, retiring in 1974.

She was a member of the Richburg First Day Baptist Church, Star of the East Chapter 109 O.E.S., Bolivar, the Richburg Literary Club, trustee of the Richburg Colonial Library, the Richburg Retired Teachers Association, the Allegany County Retired Teachers Association, the 4C's Senior Citizens Club, Bolivar and a member and trustee of the Richburg Cemetery Association.

Surviving are one daughter, Marcia (George) McGaughey of Oakfield; two grandchildren, Carrie Ruth McGaughey and James (Tracy) McGaughey; two great-grandchildren, Lucie and Luke McGaughey; several stepgrandchildren, step-great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; one stepdaughter, Theo Wade of Clarence; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a step-son, Robert Friends in 1981, a stepdaughter, Ora Jean Bullock, 1993, one brother, Glenn Bergman, and one sister, Iris Darjany.

Friends may call from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday (March 26, 2011) at the Richburg First Day Baptist Church. Funeral and committal services will follow at 11 a.m. Pastor Larry Allen will officiate. Burial will be in the Richburg Cemetery.

Memorials made to the Richburg First Day Baptist Church or to the Richburg Colonial Library would be appreciated by the family.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Schaffner Funeral Home Inc., Bolivar.
