Ruth Y. Chalmers, 93, of Galeton, PA

Ruth Y. Chalmers, 93, of Galeton, PA, passed away Friday, March 18, 2011 at Soldiers & Sailors Hospital, Wellsboro, PA.

Born June 17, 1917, in Galeton, she was the daughter of the late Erwin and Ethel (Larrison) Yahn.

She was a 1935 graduate of Galeton High School and graduated from Mansfield State College with a state standard limited certificate in 1937 and earned her B.S. degree in 1963.

She was married to Robert L. Chalmers, who preceded her in death on January 5, 1972.

Ruth taught for six years at the West Pike School, three years at the Marsh Creek School in Wellsboro, and 16 years at the Galeton Joint School.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Galeton, where she was a choir member, the assistant superintendent in the Primary Department of the Sunday School, a lay minister, an elder, a deacon, a Sunday School teacher, a summer Bible School teacher, and a member of Friend X.

Ruth was also a past president and member of the Galeton Parent-Teachers Association, a past president of the Galeton Alumni Association, a member of the National Education Association, and a member of the Pennsylvania School Retirees.

She enjoyed reading, cooking, gardening, embroidering, traveling with her family, and painting. The greatest joy of her life was her two granddaughters, and a much anticipated great grandchild to be born in September.

Ruth’s life philosophy was, “I shall pass thru this world but once. Any good that I can do, or any kindness that I can show any human being, let me do it now and not defer it, for I shall not pass this way again.”

Surviving are a son, Thomas R. (Nellie) Chalmers, Galeton; two daughters, Carol R. Chalmers, Williamsport, PA and Brenda (Terry) VanBuskirk, Kunkletown, PA; two granddaughters, Kassie (Jason) Irwin, Galeton and Callie (Rich Proctor) Chalmers, Montoursville, PA; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Ruth was predeceased by a brother, Richard Yahn and three sisters, Yetta Hulbert, Doris Yahn and Elizabeth Raymer.
