Kane Woman Died After Crash With Tractor-Trailer

A Kane woman is dead as a result of a nearly head on crash with a tractor-trailer on Route 6, two miles west of Kane, at 10:25 am this morning.

Joann Howell, 76, of Kane, PA, was extricated from the wreckage of her 1995 Buick Regal by the Kane Fire Department and transported to the Kane Hospital by ambulance. She was then flown to Hamot Hospital in Erie where she was pronounced deceased.

State Police at Kane said Howell was traveling east on Route 6, when, for unknown reason, her car traveled into the westbound lane of travel, continuing to travel eastbound.

Stephen K. Pratt, 38, of Gifford, PA, was operating a 1992 Kenworth Truck Tractor, hauling a 1992 Rogers Lowboy Trailer, westbound on Route 6, when he noticed Howell's Buick traveling in his lane of travel.

Pratt attempted to avoid a collision by traveling across the eastbound lane of travel, when, for unknown reason, the Buick traveled back towards the tractor-trailer and struck it nearly head on.

Pratt was uninjured. Both drivers were using seat belts.

State Police were assisted at the scene by Kane Fire Department, Kane Ambulance, DEP and Photographer Jay Bradish.

Fire Police from Station 10 & 26 were dispatched to close Route 6 for a time.
