Astronomy Tourism Around the World

Thursday September 1st, 2011

7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

At the Gmeiner Art and Cultural Center, 134 Main St. Wellsboro

Astronomer Steve Owens will give a whistle-stop tour of the world's darkest sites, explaining what can be seen under a truly dark sky, and why such places are worth preserving. This program is completely free of charge - sponsored by Cherry Springs State Park and hosted by the Gmeiner Art and Cultural Center.

Steve Owens is a UK astronomer based in Glasgow, Scotland. He has been a professional science communicator for over a decade, having run one of Europe's best planetariums, was the UK Coordinator for the International Year of Astronomy in 2009, has set up two dark sky places in the UK and is working on five more. He was awarded the International Dark-skies Association's Dark Sky Defender 2011 award, the Federation of Astronomy Societies' Astronomer of the Year 2010 award, and is currently a Winston Churchill Travelling Fellow on a tour of all North American Dark Sky Places.
