The Wrap up meeting for the June 24 & 25th, 2011 Relay for Life of Potter County was held July 20 at Mitchell Park.

The 2011 Relay ended with a total of $33,000, not counting “in kind contributions” which will go to support the American Cancer Society and their mission to eliminate cancer. Teams worked hard throughout the year to raise this money and they truly appreciate the support of the community.

Charlie’s Pride took first place for the “Team Most Money” Award, Roulette Firecrackers were close behind in 2nd place and Kim & Harold’s Angels came in 3rd place.

A survivor’s reception and ceremony were held during the event. Anyone who has or has had cancer was invited to a special reception and ceremony. Survivors celebrated their personal journey with others who walked a similar path at the Relay for Life. While every cancer experience is different there are some common threads that tie survivors together, such as the immeasurable strength it takes to face challenges head on.

Plans are already under way for the Relay for Life, June 24 & 25, 2012 with the 2012 Kick Off taking place on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at the Coudersport Volunteer Fire Department. The 2012 event will take place from 9AM Saturday until 9AM on Sunday to try to increase our participation in the event. Anyone with questions or who is interested in forming a team is invited to attend the “Relay Kick Off”. The success of the Relay depends entirely on community participation.

The public is invited to attend the Relay for Life of Potter County Meetings which will begin after the October Kick Off. Meetings will take place at 6:30 pm the first Tuesday of each month at the Coudersport Volunteer Fire Department. These informational meetings will provide a chance to learn more and see how we as a community can make a difference in the fight against cancer.

Taking an active role is easy and the degree of commitment varies depending on how involved the participant wants to become. The rewards of being a part of this great event can be life changing; so why not get started with your role in the Relay for Life today! You do not have to be a cancer survivor, or even know someone who is to participate.

There are many opportunities to become involved with the Relay for Life. For more information call Rachel Forsythe at 814-203-6578 or Katie Carlson at 814-368-3646

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer; saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education advocacy and service.

People should be ashamed.

What time is the kickoff on October 22? I am a mother of a cancer survivor and very interested in putting together a team so all info would be appreciated.

Everyone should look below at the obituary of a very nice woman formerly of Austin whom died at age 40 leaving three young boys behind as to why everyone should donate to this cause!

I am not positive of the time, but I will find out and let you know. Sorry for the oversight.

Donating to this cause wouldn't have helped that woman at all. Only $1 out of every 8 actually goes toward helping cancer victims and only a percentage of that goes toward the research of preventing cancer.

The time that was discussed and agreed upon for the kick off meeting is 2PM to 6PM according to the notes. It was discussed that a little later may be appropriate as there was talk about a bonfire afterwards. For more details regarding the meeting, or starting a team, please call Rachel or Katie directly and they will be able to give you the most updated and accurate information.

Thank You, It is not all about rasing money, it is about families living with cancer getting together to help each other.

The Relay for Life events are so much more than just a fund raiser. In my opinion, that is just a side benefit. It gives people from all walks of life that have either survived cancer, or were close to someone that was afflicted, the opportunity to get together in a common setting to remember, forget, share, laugh, cry, and love. It is like a yearly class reunion that spans decades of generations across the county. It is truly a life altering and addicting experience. Everyone is welcomed and supported with open arms. No matter how much, or how little of your time that you can devote to the event, it is greatly appreciated and only enhances the event for all participants.

I dare you to get involved and come away with any regrets.
