200 Foot Deep Hole Closes Route 125 South Of Shamokin

Route 125 closed for safety reasons south of Shamokin due to threat from large mine subsidence; Potential danger extreme

Sept. 21, 2011 @ 9 p.m.

A large mine subsidence has opened up along State Route 125 south of Shamokin, forcing PennDOT to close the highway for safety reasons.

Route 125 is closed between Route 61 (Market Street) in Shamokin and SR 2044 (Upper Road) in Cameron Township.

Traffic will be detoured via Upper Road to Trevorton, then onto SR 225 and SR 61 into Shamokin.

The mine subsidence is near the edge of the roadway on SR 125 and is at least 200 feet deep. The potential danger is prompting emergency officials to warn residents to stay away.

The subsidence is south of the Village of Burnside.

PennDOT anticipates an extended closure due to this mine subsidence in Coal Township, Northumberland County.
