John W. Palmer, 61, formerly of Eldred, Pa., and Portville, NY

OLEAN, NY - John W. Palmer, 61, formerly of Eldred, Pa., and Portville, passed away Monday (Sept. 5, 2001) at Olean General Hospital following an illness.

Born Nov. 3, 1949, in Olean, he was a son of George F. and Margaret Wagner Palmer. John was a 1967 graduate of Otto-Eldred High School and later attended Eastern Pilgrim College in Allentown, Pa.

Mr. Palmer was employed by Stroehmann Bakery in Olean. He was later employed at Portville Central School in the bus garage as a driver and mechanic.

Before his retirement, due to poor health, he worked for St. Bonaventure University as a security guard.

John had attended the McCrea Brook Wesleyan Church and was also a member of the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed hunting and restoring classic vehicles. John was a past stock car driver in the area.

Recently he enjoyed baking for his friends and family, and spending time with his three granddaughters.

Surviving are one son Seth Palmer of Olean; one daughter, Allison Ayers of Olean; three granddaughters, Morgan Ayers, Lauren McClelland and Haleigh McClelland; two brothers, Boyd (Janice) Palmer of Eldred and George (Christine) Palmer of Lancaster, Pa.; three sisters, Norma (Eugene) Allegretto of Bradford, Pa., Jean Harris of Millerton, Pa. and Becky Lynn (Edward) O'Brien of Eldred; as well as several nieces and nephews. Also surviving is an aunt, Marion Hooker, of Erie, Pa.

He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Ronald Ayers, in 1998, and two brothers, Frederick Palmer in 1999 and Glenn Palmer in 2005.

Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. Friday (Sept. 9, 2011) at the Frame Funeral Home in Eldred where a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Bill Nace, pastor of the McCrea Brook Wesleyan Church, officiating.

Mr. Palmer chose to participate in the Upstate New York Transplant Services.
