ALL CALL For Mulch Fire In Ulysses

Fire Sirens throughout the county and beyond have been sounded since a fire in debris or mulch at the former Ulysses Lumber Company on Rt. 49 that was called in at 1:00 pm has been keeping firefighters busy attempting to extinguish it.

Tankers, manpower and fire police have been requested from every department in the county and even into Allegany County.

This does not sound good.

Probably not much to look at since it's a mulch fire, just a lot of smoke. Depending on how big the pile is will determine how hard it will be to extinguish. Kind of like a coal mine burning if it's a BIG pile. May go for a ride to see for myself.

OSHA should setup a regional office there.

You need to spread it out to get it out! Mulch just simmers.

im a firefighter from Morris we were heading over that way last night with a crew and from what 911 told me the mulch pile was 300ftx250 and 100 ft deep only got to westfield before they started recalling everyone

Today 10-08-2011 It was and still seems to be a controled fire . So why do the trucks have to respond with sires blowing and driving above the speed limit. (35 MPH) Now instead of a fire we have "smog city."

Isn't this the same problem they had with a farm on Fox Hill Road? They sent the fireman home and on their way and the fire rekindled? Seems like someone needs to know how to assess the fires better up there...Irked because it is costing people and insurance company money each time there is a rekindle. :( Very sad!

Rekindle today

How can it rekindle when it never has been out! It is still burning this morning.

well to answer your question if that your going to a call in emergency mode L+S the operating guidelines say if your red lights are on then your siren better be going and speed limits for firetrucks, fire chiefs etc... is 10mph above the posted speed limit no more than that and if there was no structures in danger then there was no reason to be speeding and if which im sure that lumber company has a few bucket loaders just start tearing that mulch pile apart could have saved alot of insurance money rather than having 3 different counties bringing fire personnel in

Sunday and still smoking pretty hard...now how bout all those bitchers' about the out door wood boilers????
This smoke is so much worse than out door wood boiler systems...Is any state agency monitoring this smoldering mess?
I hope the star gazers can still see the stars tonight with all this smoke...much worse than the red light atop the wind turbines...just sayin'!
