Virginia S. Brinnier, a long-time Bolivar, NY resident

ERIE, PA - Virginia S. Brinnier, a long-time Bolivar, NY resident, passed away Tuesday (Oct. 4, 2011) at the Golden Living Center-Walnut Creek in Erie after a brief illness.

Born Jan. 29, 1921, in Olean, NY, she was the daughter of Lester W. and Flora Amsden Shaner. On March 13, 1943, in New York City, she married Gilbert H. Brinnier, who predeceased her on July 11, 2007.

Mrs. Brinnier was a graduate of Bolivar Central School. She went on to attend Alfred University.
During World War II, she worked in the Bethesda Naval Hospital, returning to Bolivar in 1950. Mrs. Brinnier went to work for the former Bolivar Breeze, the Allegany Refinery in Bolivar and retired from Bolivar Central Schools.

She was a member of the Bolivar United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, Little Genesee Garden Club, Olean General Hospital Auxiliary and the Bolivar Country Club.

Following her retirement, Mrs. Brinnier enjoyed traveling with her husband, visiting Alaska, Europe, the Hawaiian Islands, the Virgin Islands and the Panama Canal. She also enjoyed gardening, nature, reading and spending time with her great-granddaughter, Claire.

Surviving is a daughter, Bonnie Renaud of Erie, a grandson, Nicholas (Deanna) Renaud of Erie; a great-granddaughter, Claire Renaud; a sister, Mary Lou Joyce of Key Largo, FL; a brother, Philip (Norma) Shaner of Key Largo; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, John Shaner.

Friends were received at the Schaffner Funeral Home, Inc., 554 Main St., Bolivar. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday (Oct. 7, 2011) at the funeral home. The Rev. Matthew Kofahl officiated. Burial was in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Bolivar.
