Woman Reported Problems Before Gas Compressor Station Fire

Gas blaze probed:
Neighbor says she had reported problems at site

ARTEMAS — A resident living about five miles from Thursday’s natural gas compressor station fire said she contacted Columbia Gas Transmission Co. two hours before the blaze broke out to report vibrations and a strong odor.

Chaneysville resident Mary McConnell said she telephoned the emergency number at Columbia at 10:32 p.m. Wednesday. She reported that her house was vibrating and she could smell a strong chemical odor.

“Wednesday night the house was vibrating,” she said.

The fire at the station was reported at 12:30 a.m. after what some local residents said was an explosion. Columbia, however, has yet to confirm any type of explosion. More...

It is sad that gas companys think it is better to bet that nothing will happen rather than do regular upkeep!
