John E. Brooks, 81, of 579 S. Main St., , Bolivar, NY

BOLIVAR, NY - John E. Brooks, 81, of 579 S. Main St., passed away Sunday (Dec. 25, 2011) at the Wellsville Manor Care Center following a lengthy illness.

Born Jan. 24, 1930, in Canton, Ohio, he was a son of Matilda Handmore. On April 24, 1954, in Olean, he married the former Maryanne Riehle, who survives.

John was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the U.S. Army.

He was employed by the former Clark Bros. in Olean, later Dresser-Rand, from 1952 to 1988 as a machine operator and inspector.

He was a member of Kenyon Andrus American Legion Post 772, of Bolivar, St. Stephen's Club of Olean, 40 Coachman Camping Club, Richburg Rod & Gun Club and Union Local 4601 United Steelworkers of Olean.

He enjoyed hunting.

Surviving besides his wife are four children, Barbara (Donald) Pitts, of Randolph, Beverly Becker, of Plano, Texas, Judy Padilla, of Virginia Beach, Va., and George Brooks, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Willard (Sandy) Handmore, of Olean,

He was predeceased by a brother, Robert Handmore.

Friends may call at the Schaffner Funeral Home Inc., Bolivar, on Thursday (Dec. 29,, 2011) from 4 to 7 p.m., at which time funeral services will be held with Deacon Frank Pasquale officiating. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany.
