Joseph J. Cwiklinski, 72, of 8141 Stewart Road, Friendship, NY

FRIENDSHIP, NY - Joseph J. Cwiklinski, 72, of 8141 Stewart Road, passed away Saturday (Dec. 24, 2011) at Rochester General Hospital after a brief illness related to cancer.

Joe was born at home in Sloan on Sept. 22, 1939. He was the son of Irene Bednark and Stanley Cwiklinski II. Upon graduation from Bolivar Central School he was employed as a draftsman at Clark Bros. He later joined the navy, retiring after 23 years as an honored career diesel submariner. He served his country in the Vietnam War as a chief radioman. The family then retired in Friendship after moving from coast to coast. He worked several years at the Friendship Dairies as a maintenance director. He later retired from the YMCA as the facilities director.

Joe's life centered around his family. He always had a child in tow. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. Joe traveled across the country camping and boating with his family. He enjoyed country music and dancing. His hobbies also included being a ham radio operator; his call sign was N2QZQ. He was a foster parent, a 4-H leader, and he worked avidly with scouting. He touched the hearts of the people whose paths he crossed. He will be remembered with love and smiles.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Connie (Stockman) Cwiklinski, and the three children they raised together, son, Jeffrey (Marsha) Cwiklinski of Friendship; two daughters, Jody Graham of Portville and Jennifer (Albert) Pacer of Richburg; grandchildren, Stephanie (Doug) Crawford, Stephen Graham, Samantha (Brian) Nichols, Nicholas Graham, Jonathan, Jason and Jessica Cwiklinski, Allison, Bradley and Kelsey Pacer; great-grandchildren, Andrew, Dylan, Benjamin and Joshua Crawford; several nieces and nephews; two brothers, Stanley (Lois) Cwiklinski III of Yorkshire and Quentin (Debbie) Sexton of Olean; and two sisters, Melonie Sexton of Olean and Michele (Bill) Sibble of Wellsville.

He was predeceased by a sister, Marta Calgren, and his mother, Irene.

Friends may call at the Truesdell Funeral Home in Friendship from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday (Dec. 29, 2011) at St. Andrews Episcopal Church. Committal services will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery. The Rev. Marian Schneider of Friendship, associate priest of Allegany County Episcopal Ministries, will officiate. Memorials may be made to Hope Lodge, 1120 S. Goodman St., Rochester.
