Penelec workers ratify deal giving them 3 percent annual raises

GoErie.com

The 500 or so members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 459 who work at Penelec have a new contract.

The union this week ratified a four-year contract that takes effect May 15, 2012, and expires May 14, 2016.

The deal includes a 3 percent wage increase for all Local 459 employees each year of the contract. More...

so didn't seniors, but they didn't get 3% raises the last few years

No offense to anyone, but why compare seniors to the slectrical workers? These guys are WORKING, not retired, and they have kids and families to feed. I understand that senior citizens need to eat too, but why compare them every time someone asks for or gets a raise in money? The very people who are asking for LESS government in our lives are mostly the ones (Tea Party) who bitch about no raises in social security. You can't have it both ways!! Personally, I say cut the foreign aid to about a third of what it is now ands give it to seniors. Also, cut all non-taxable deals with all governments, like when a company comes in and is given tax exempt status. Just me.

Unions suck! Shouldn't the people that work their entire live get a raise first? In case you forgot they are our senior citizens!

I bet my bills are at least triple what the average senior citizens are. House payment , car payment, kids college and i could go on... but i won`t because it is too depressing

shouldnt of had kids. you knew in advance that they cost money to raise.

Hey 7:46, just wait until YOU are a senior. Probably won't BE any socila security by then. And THEN we will REALLY hear you whine. And to the other poster whining about how high your bills are....Well, we seniors paid off all of our bills and are living on very meager income from SS. No Perks for us and when we were raising OUR families OUR bills were just as bad as yours only the cost of living wasn't so rediculous. Thank all of your wonderful "Public Servants" for stealing all of your money and making the cost of living sky high. And thank you 8:53

I know a TON of seniors who never worked a day in their life and they collect!!!
If you're using SS to live, you didn't plan well enough or save enough. Too bad if you can't afford the cost of living, in a capitalist society you'll have people starving to death if they don't have something else to fall back on. Stop going to bingo and the bars in the afternoon.

Well, I worked almost every day of my adult life and there weren't any 401k's and such that the employers matched, but my husband does have a good pension, So shut your pie hole 4:32. Neither do I play bingo or sit in a bar. Some day when you are eligable you will be screaming because there is nothing left of the ss that you paid into because the government will have spent it ALL by then. What do you do, judge everybody's daily routine by your choice of entertainment? Oh no, wait, you are on welfare and don't WANT to work, right?

Reasonable raises for people who work hard to provide a vital service. Seniors are getting 3.6% in COLA for their social security this year. People need to stop practicing the politics of jealousy and advocate for all low and middle class people to do better. And to the "unions suck" poster, why is that?

And to the "unions suck" poster, why is that?

PLAIN AND SIMPLE, IT'S BECAUSE THEY DO. PERIOD.

4:46 Your use of caps doesn't help your point any, because you really aren't making a point, other than to show you can't make one. And whenever I read anything by anyone who summarizes with "Period", I realize what I'm up against and concede the loss to the greater intellect.

People who disparage (that means 'say stupid things about' for you idiots who don't understand)are:
A) Jealous morons who don't have the education, gumption or energy to get and hold a good job
B) Either rich themselves, or like teabagger morons, too stupid to know they're sleeping with the enemy
C) Reliefers who depend on the gummint for assistance
or,
D) Just tiny little people who can't stand to see someone else have a good job and benes, and want to blame their own peers for having more than them.

I'll say that the union detractors on here are a combination of E, all of the above.
Something to remember.... if a person is a member of a union, it's because they are a WORKER who likes and wants to keep their job. To be against them is to say that you prefer the OWNERS and the rich guys who don't need to belong to a union. Use your head people, when you cut on unions you're cutting on friends, family, and WORKING people.

How many businesses and companies have either gone belly up or moved out of the US because of unions?

Union busting is what has lost American jobs (good paying jobs). We need to bring unions back to fight for the middle class. I am a proud member of IBEW Local 97 and thank God everyday for my good paying job. Lineman especially earn their wages. They have to many times work out in horrible weather conditions to get your power back on and also go away to help out other areas of our country. Lineman are a highly skilled work force that puts their lives on the line everyday for you. Many members of unions because they do make good wages donate a lot of money to things such as the United Way which in turn helps the commmunity. So my dear friends out there in gripe land...food for thought.

Unions are good! I sure wish I had a union to stand behind my 9 Co workers and I when our company got bought out by another. I took on more work and was cut to 12 dollars an hour from 20 dollars. 3 weeks vacation, to 1 week. Lost our 401k plan. Health insurance went up from 5 to 45 dollars a week for less insurance. I don't blame the company though, they are in business to make money! I'm living the American dream though, driving a nice truck, coming home to a nice house everynight, staying well fed, and keeping warm. How do I do this still one might ask? I work 3 weekends a month at another job! Stay positive folks!
