John R. Hughes, Sr., 86, of Coudersport, PA

John R. Hughes, Sr., 86, of Coudersport, PA died Friday, January 20, 2012 at Sweden Valley Manor in Coudersport.

Born on June 14, 1925 in Wheeling, West Virginia, he was the son of Robert D. and Flora M. Haning Hughes. On June 9, 1951 in Coudersport, he married Phyllis Moran, who died on December 20, 2002.

Mr. Hughes was a veteran of the U. S. Navy having served during World War II. Following his military service he worked as a window washer in Canton, Ohio for 16 years. He then moved to Coudersport and was employed at the Potter County Texaco from 1957-1964. He was the manager there from 1964 until 1974. He was then employed for 13 years with the Potter County Sheriff’s Department and later with Adelphia Cable Communications, retiring in 2001.

Mr. Hughes was a member of St. Eulalia Catholic Church, a life member of American Legion Potter Post 192 and the Disabled American Veterans.

Surviving are one son, Joseph M. Hughes and his wife, Barbara, of Belfast, NY, one daughter, Rosemary Musser and her husband, Brian, of Coudersport, eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one son, John R. Hughes, Jr., who died on Oct. 12, 2011, one brother, William Hughes, and two sisters, Beatrice Karschner and Phyllis Sanford.

Friends are invited to John’s Life Celebration beginning on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 with visitation from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at the Fickinger Funeral Home of Coudersport.

Visitation will also be held at St. Eulalia Catholic Church on Wednesday from 10:00am until 11:00am at which time a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated with the Reverend James Campbell, pastor, as celebrant.

Military rites will be accorded at the church by members of the Potter County Honor Guard. Burial will be in St. Eulalia Catholic Cemetery.

hey Grandpa, i wanna say thank you for everything you have taught me when were together, ive enjoyed every second with you. I learned so much from you, you're my inspiration, my guide, my role model, my grandfather and now you are my angel along with grandma and dad. I love You Grandpa i will always miss you.

Grandpa I just wanted to thank you for everything you did for me and my family while you were here. I really enjoyed seeing you on Tuesdays for the hour I was at the manor. I will miss you every single day! You always made sure that we had the things we needed to survive when I was a kid. I love you and I miss you and Grandma every day! Rest in Piece now!
