Leader-Enterprise Reports County Solicitor Bruce Cahilly Has Been Terminated

Commissioners terminate Cahilly

By Kimberley Hoak Staff Reporter
Potter Leader-Enterprise

"I was shocked. Shocked," Potter County Solicitor D. Bruce Cahilly told the Leader-Enterprise Monday when asked if he knew his appointment as County Solicitor had come to an end.

Cahilly has been terminated after having served as Potter County Solicitor for approximately 35 of the last 40 years.

D. Bruce Cahilly, who has served as solicitor for Potter County for decades was informed late last week he will no longer be serving in the position by Potter County Commissioner Doug Morley. The Commissioners were expected to take action during Thursday's meeting.

I saw this long drawn out story in the newspaper. What's the big deal? No one has a lifetime lock on an appointed political job and if the commissioners can save money by getting a new lawyer then go for it.

It is time for Bruce to go quietly into the night as he has probably pocketed far more than a million bucks from the taxpayers for this small part of his legal practice.

So who is replacing him?

Anonymous said...

I heard the Smith Law Firm is replacing him.

Obviously if Bruce has been there for the past 35 years, he has been doing something right. Come on people. If things were not being done properly, would he of been in that position for so long?

To the person at 11:11 -- how do you figure this will save money? Where are the numbers?

This Board of Commissioners has terminated several persons with no notice...people who were doing an excellent job in their positions. I have an issue with this procedure! I'm sure Tom Shaffer will do an excellent job...as did Bruce. Bruce will be greatly missed by the persons he worked with...

The person who says these people were doing an excellent job -- do you work there so you can verify that? The fact that terminations have been made quietly and with dignity or by attrition tells me that they have been discrete and sensitive. They are responsible for the public business and we should expect high standards and an exempilary performance. That is why I am asking if you really know if they were doing an excellent job and I really want to know. I am not meaning to show any disrespect in asking that.

To answer 5:47 its in the paper that the change to a new lawyer will save the taxpayers $30,000 for the first year.

Maybe someone should have run for the commissioner positions in the County. I believe they were unopposed. I know Bruce on a personal level he is a gentleman and certainly has had the best intrest of the county at heart. Was this a "cost saving " cut d/t Mr Shaffer's wife is employed at the school and has health insurance, and the cost of insurance on Mr. Cahilly new family became an issue? If that be the case perhaps some honesty needed to be addressed, seems unfair to tell someone in the middle of the month sorry your replaced all done,oh by the way your health care coverage is done the end of the month . Maybe the "contract" if you will needed to be put out for bid. Just sosme ideas for people to think about.

It is all about saving tax payers money! not about how nice or good of a person you are!

This discussion is ridiculous. Why in the hell would your commissioners ever be paying for their lawyer's health insurance in the first place? In my career I have retained legal counsel in both my personal business affairs and in my role as an elected official. Never once in those thirty years have I or my agency or employer paid for our attorney's health insurance. I do not know this gentleman, but I assume that he has multiple clients as a practicing attorney. Why should one of those clients be paying for his health insurance and the others all getting a "free ride" (at the taxpayers' expense)?

After reading the comment at 10:52 I cannot imagine any reason for further discussion. Any elected official who would want to pay $30,000 more for a service of equal or better value ought to be impeached or at least voted out of office. That's what is wrong with our country -- it's called "cronyism." This is a sensible, businesslike move so save me all the sentimental mush about so and so is a good guy. This is business and not friends and family.

What he/she said (9:22)!

First of all, the numbers do not add up. I know. Second, I believe it was the former Judge Leete who decided to cover the position in medical care, when he held it for a short period. Third, Mr Cahilly just closed a deal that would more than pay for his salary for the next two years...just as he has in the past. Unless you know what you're talking about, you shouldn't. They didn't save the county anything, after a series of moves, the chicken coop no longer has a gatekeeper!

I have been reading about the termination of Bruce Cahilly and was wondering why he wasn't asked to resign? You would think after years of service to the County, if he no longer had the confidence of the Commissioners they would have given him the oppurtunity to resign and not the way it was done. No class.

Our Commissioners don’t have any CLASS and NEVER DID… More money has been wasted than you’ll ever know. Call them slick Wiley’s for short. Most likely Bruce was trying to keep them under control and they didn’t like it.

Believe me, when you hire a lawyer, you're paying his insurance, cable bill, ex-wife(s) support, and a whole lot of other crap. The simpleton who wrote at 6:13 must be one helluva businessman to not realize that fact. To put it up front usually means that the solicitor has been hired at a rate LESS than that he charged for private citizens…. which would explain the health insurance clause. Sounds like a standard third-class county contract to me.
