Potter, McKean, & Cameron Co. Fire & EMS Get State Grants From Slot Machine Gaming

Causer Announces Local Fire, Ambulance Grants

BRADFORD – Volunteer fire and emergency response organizations in Cameron, McKean and Potter counties have been awarded more than $316,000 in grants from the state, Rep. Martin Causer (R-Turtlepoint) announced today.

“We are so fortunate in our region to have dedicated volunteers who are willing to serve our communities,” Causer said. “These state grants will help support them in their mission of protecting the public.”

The grants were awarded to 37 fire and ambulance companies in the three-county area. The funding comes from an ongoing grant program created by the Legislature and administered by the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency and Office of the State Fire Commissioner. All funding comes from the proceeds from slot machine gaming, and not general fund tax revenue.

This year’s program provided $25 million in grants statewide. Projects eligible for funding include: construction or renovation of a fire or ambulance company facility, purchase or repair of equipment, training, or reduction of existing debt.

As a taxpayer i would like to know down to the penny what my money is spent on in the Austin fire dept! Oh sure they say you can see the books by appointment. Why not make them public? If things were more open you would get 100% more support.

Apparently you missed the part that said the money did not come from the general tax fund and came from slot machine revenue? That means its not tax dollars, do some research before running down VOLUNTEERS that come when you call

I cannot imagine the amount of money it takes to run a volunteer fire dept. . . Gas to run the vehicles, working equipment, updated supplies...the list must go on and on. From what I see here on Solomon's Blog, our fire dept. volunteers here in Shinglehouse are extremely busy. Also, I imagine they need to stay updated with their EMT training. Surely that's not free for them. . . I'm sure the money will be well spent.

Yea it comes from TAXES on slot machines ! No matter how you spin it! it is still TAX money! Does Austin still pay some of their (VOLUNTEERS)? Where does the money come from to pay the (VOLUNTEERS)?

Why is asking to see the books of any of theese departments running them down??? Why is it drama??? Why would you care if someone wanted to see what your books said unless there is something that you dont want them to see??? I would imagine that the proper and appropriate response would be an invatation to look at the books..

And on the same token why is so wrong for them to say that you can see the books by appt only... They are volunteers who, more then likely have a full time job, have families, so a little understanding that way would be nice from the public as well...

Just my 2 cents...

Why would Austin VOLUNTEER Fire Department pay anyone to do the books? Especially if that person was so supposedly devoted to serving the community?

An equipment audit is being called for. The people want to know that the equipment bought with taxpayer money is within ALL departments and not being misused for personal gain.

If people would stop criticizing and running these volunteers down every opportunity they get these departments may be more cooperative with everyone. I for one hear it all the time about our local departments but yet many have better response time and just as well trained personnel as paid manned stations. So why can't everyone just be happy there is money coming into our communities that will benefit these departments to better serve the public.

8:56-
Volunteers aren't paid

The money comes from taxes paid from revenue of the slot machines, not your tax dollars. And why shouldn't the books be by appt only. There are not personal on station 24/7 so obviously you have to make an appt for someone to be there. And in most cases the departments are an entity of a borough or township and therefore needs approval from them as well to open the books to the public. And FYI departments are audited every year to keep track of the very thing you are complaining about. And they have to pay for the service which is not cheap.

12:53 There are certain people that have taken alot of money from the Austin fire dept. over the years while calling themselves volunteers thats why people are pissed! (10:54 amen!)

Anonymous said...

So someone stealing from a volunteer organization makes everyone in that department guilty??? Come on people grow up

To 8:56 the AVFD has never paid there volunteers.. To 10:54 there is no one paid to do the books.. And to 5:19 instead Of running down a department on here why dOnt you turn the people stealing in, im sure the department would take action.. And really unless your a member how would you even know.. And if you are a member shame on you for running your department down.. I hope all Of those complaing are willing to step up, spend hours on training, put themselves in danger for others,
lose sleep and leave there families when all of the volunteers that department has get sick of being run
down and accused just quit responding.. I cant believe the way people run down a good thing like this.. And i cant believe it is allowed on this blog..

I didn't say they pay their volunteers! I didn't say the volunteer dept.is a bad thing!I said a certian few have made a ton of money off the dept. over the years! You all know who they are! It is shamefull, but when it comes to money the ones doing it have no shame!

I know some of the people from the Austin fire department. All the ones i know are good decent people. They do this for free.

Why? Maybe because they know how to spend their town-peoples money wisely.
