Washington, D.C. – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has announced that the application period for the Fiscal Year 2011 Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant Program is now open, according to Representative Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson. “The Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant Program assists local fire departments supplement their staffing capabilities, in order have adequate deployment and response capabilities,” said Rep. Thompson.

SAFER grants provide funding directly to fire departments and volunteer firefighter interest organizations in order to help them increase the number of trained, “front-line” firefighters available in their communities. The SAFER program is administered by FEMA’s Grant Programs Directorate in coordination with the U. S. Fire Administration.

“FEMA has a variety of tools available to assist with the application process and organizations eligible to apply should begin the process as soon as possible,” Thompson explained.

Grant applicants can obtain information online (http://www.fema.gov/firegrants/), by telephone (toll-free at 1-866-274-0960) or by e-mail (firegrants@dhs.gov). The SAFER Help Desk hours of operation during the application period are Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
