Pennsylvania 4-H Week Celebrated Across The State

Pennsylvania 4-H Week Celebrated Across The State

by Sheila Gabreski

Program Assistant

Penn State Extension - Potter County

Pennsylvania 4-H Week was celebrated across the state this past week, March 11th-16th. Local 4-H youth and volunteers spent the week actively informing our Potter citizens about the 4-H program and the numerous benefits available through 4-H experiences.

The Potter County 4-H program prides itself on emphasizing the learn-by-doing approach. We have 17 active 4-H clubs across the county emphasizing project skills such as animal science, cooking & sewing scrapbooking, shooting sports, gardening, and more. Our 4-H Clubs elect officers and practice parliamentary procedure in their business meetings. They hone their public speaking skills and are required to do a formal demonstration in front of a club audience every year.

Potter County 4-H clubs also pride themselves on community service and teaching youth how to be active in their local neighborhoods. Our 116 Potter County 4-H members visit long-term care homes, collect donations for food banks and cancer associations, and give to the SPCA. They clean our County fairgrounds, place flowers at local cemeteries, recycle bottles/cans, and stock fish in local waterways. They collect used eye glasses and take valentines to Charles Cole Hospital. These youth work HARD to make a difference through their involvement in 4-H.

The next time you see a 4-H member or hear about a 4-H fundraiser, please support them with a smile or a donation. 4-H has been a strong part of Potter County history since 1916 and it will continue to be a program that teaches LEADERSHIP, CITIZENSHIP, and LIFE SKILLS for many years to come.

To learn more about the Potter County 4-H program or its alumni and friends associations, contact Sheila Gabreski at the Penn State Extension office in Coudersport, 274-8540 or srg22@psu.edu. The 4-H program is a youth development program of Penn State Extension. 4-H is open to all youth between the ages of 8 and 19.
