Ruth E. Major, 88, a longtime resident of Austin, PA

Ruth E. Major “Beloved Mother And Grandmother”

Ruth E. Major, 88, a longtime resident of Austin, passed away on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 in Sweden Valley Manor, Coudersport, after a long illness.

Born August 26, 1923 in Cuba, NY, she was a daughter of Henry John and Mary E. Clark Manning.

She was married to LaVerne C. Major, who predeceased her.

Ruth was a graduate of Cuba (NY) High School. She was formerly employed by the Cuba Cheese Factory in Cuba. While residing in Austin, she worked for several area restaurants and businesses. She was well known for the pies she baked for area restaurants in Coudersport and Austin.

Ruth had resided in Austin since 1945. She was a member of the Austin United Methodist Church and a member of the Austin Volunteer Fire Department, where she was active in organizing funeral dinners, bingo and fish fries. She was a charter member of the Austin VFW 7810 where she served as president of the Ladies Auxiliary for many years. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting and caring for her plants.

Surviving are four children, Judy A. (Lynn “Skip”) Snyder of Coudersport, James Lee (Sandy) Major of Kersey, Vicki L. (Richard) Wold of Austin and Peggy J. (Simon) Peace of Reynoldsville; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Laura (Paul) Gordon of Black Creek, NY and Betty Gehris of Cuba; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Ruth was predeceased by a sister, Mae Treusdell; and a brother, Earl Manning.

Friends may call on Saturday, March 24, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Austin United Methodist Church where funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. The Rev. John Baney, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Black Creek Cemetery, Black Creek, NY.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Austin Emergency Services Ambulance Fund, Austin, PA 16720.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse, PA.

Ruth was once a tenent of my Dad & Mother. They got along so well & she was such a kind sweet & funny lady; one of the best ever.Deepest Sympathy to all her family.R.I.P. & have fun visiting with my Mom again!
