Rep. Causer Goes To Bat For Gravel Bar Removal Permits

House Committees Examine Gravel Bars, Small Stream Flooding Issues

The House Environmental Resources and Energy Committee, of which I am a member, joined the House Finance Committee this week to host an informational meeting on small stream flooding issues, including gravel bars.

The gravel bar issue – particularly DEP’s refusal to issue permits to area municipalities to remove these obstructions – was a hot topic during House Appropriations Committee budget hearings last month. I was pleased to have the opportunity to discuss the issue further.

Offering comments during the meeting were officials from the Department of Environmental Protection, State Association of Township Supervisors and State Association of Conservation Districts.

While the discussion was thorough and helpful, the problem was most certainly not resolved. I will continue pushing DEP to develop a streamlined permitting process to give our communities the flexibility they need to address these gravel bars. At the same time, I am exploring options for potential legislation to address the issue once and for all.

Video of the full meeting can be found on my website.

It shouldn't take an act of congress to clean a damn stream out to prevent flooding. The DEP has way to much power they need to be put in their place!
