Chamber Of Commerce Writes About Roulette Yard Sales

To Whom this concerns,
I cannot believe some people in this town!! It is so sad that everyone is out to knock you down.

I cannot believe you cannot pay $5.00 to be on the map for yard sales.

We are a CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, rather some people believe it or not and we have been grandfathered and have everything to show it. Also why do people who are now doing some other things such as fap have to cook on town wide yard sales and try to take business away from us.

Well, we know the people and I don't know how they have enough nerve and why they would want to ask to rent the park and rent the park. The money we make all goes to there for fixing things kids destroy, upkeep, garbage, water, electric, etc. We don't get rich.

Also it is rented every weekend, it is used a lot. I would like to have some responses from people that think we have done a great job for the last 11 years. Maybe some of you should have, and still should, step up to the plate to help, huh???????

We have always done the Easter Egg Hunt and had great prizes and now I hear a certain some one is going to take that over. Find your own s--------to do. We really work hard there to keep it nice. So people who couldn't spend $5.00, go somewhere else to do your fund raising.

C of C

Thanks to all of you who paid to be on the map!!!!!!!!!!

It appears your comments are aimed at fundraising, I guess. But there is at least one person out there, not raising funds, who didn't really intend to have a yard sale until the last minute & didn't even think about the map, the fee or the unintended impact on the Chamber of Commerce. Consider me informed.

This is an immature and totally unprofessional letter. Makes me remember why I moved away from Potter County at 18 years old!

I was born and raised in Roulette as well as my grandmother(Maude Burt Young Westfall) and father (Kenneth Young)and when i saw the posted photos of the yard sales it made me so homesick for the hometown that i grew up in.

Wow I cannot believe someone who write a post like this! Just proves how unprofessional this person is!

Regarding stepping up to the plate, I am not the one this is aimed at because I did not do fundraising or have a yard sale for that matter, however I am sure there are some people who would step up and help if

1. They knew when you held meetings or how to get involved

2. You got rid of some of the old grumpy birds that have to have everything there way and do not have an open mind for new things, people, or ideas

3. You had a little class and professionalism! The above mentioned post is again ridiculous and rude and shows your maturity!!

If the park is rented and rented and you use the $ to fix things then why in the h___ is it all falling apart! Half the toys there are broken and can't be played on so exactly where is that $ going? And so what if someone else is having an Easter egg hunt?! Just means the kids will get to do more than one and maybe the person handing out prizes at this one won't be so damn rude to the little kids who are just excited they won. I believe the lady handing them out was named Jan or June and let me tell you she shouldn't be allowed near kids at an event like that with the way she acted!!!!

At any rate I admire your professionalism and as much as I would like to get involved in the RCC, I would rather be where people can be mature and role model for the kids in this area instead of acting like one!!!

and yet, 11:23pm, you read it and decided to comment on it haha :-P

Anonymous said...

i dont know if this would help but port allegany charges a fee anytime someone has a yard sale so then there wouldnt be this controversy over who apid and who didnt whether they were on the map or not its the same fee

Anonymous said...

This letter does nothing but reflect negatively on the Chamber. It is very unprofessional and appears to be nothing more than sour grapes.

Anonymous said...

Some Chamber of Commerce you are. Your claim is your park, guess what, kids play in your park and go to school. Try working with this Person who is trying to raise money to help children instead of fighting against him. This is for the children not for your GLORY!

Anonymous said...

Let me see if I have this correct. If I want to have a yard sale in Roulette, I must pay the yard sale troll a $5.00 fee or fear public ridicule on here? That sounds to me like a permit fee rather than a fee to be added to the map. If that is the case, shouldn't I have to get a permit from the borough rather than the "Chamber of Commerce"? If I want to have a yard sale one the same weekend as your precious townwide yard sale and don't want to be on your map and support a bogus organization, that is my choice. Now put that in your self riteous pipe and smoke it.

The C of C should have had someone else write that letter. The point gets lost in the spelling and grammatical errors. Not technical things from high school either. I hope it is not representative of the education of the C of C, or of Roulette.

Unknown said...

Wow! Is the Roulette C of C run by 13 year old junior high schoolers. I understand the frustration expressed but the immature nature of this letter is shameful. Hey Roulette C of C if I give you $5 will you be my friend? Y or N circle one!

I'm sorry, I agree w/poster 11:23. Not classy, not professional ~take it somewhere else this blog is not the place for that! Grow up! Get a life!

Is Solomons for news or for picking fights? In all honesty, this thing shouldn't have been posted as it's not news... it's just more of the feud over $5. Roulette C and C, please tell us where to send the $5 and I'm sure you'll have plenty of people paying you to shut up.

The one that is doing all the complaing wrote anasty latter but doese not put there name they must be speaking fore the group of the Chamber of Commerce maybe It time to replace ALL OF Them

Anonymous said...

Sounds to me like the Chamber would like a pat on the back. " I want to hear from people who think we have done a good job" Unfortunately we have many people who are in need and there is room for everyone. This is a free world so get over yourself!

Anonymous said...

First of all, this has to be one of the most poorly written letters I have seen in quite awhile. If you are representing an organization, such as a Chamber of Commerce, you should have had a little more class and grammar. Now, to get to the point at hand, the Chamber of Commerce, anywhere, is a non-profit organization, used to better the community. Running the people that are in your community down, as you've done in this letter, is absolutely absurd. Things happen everyday, you don't know exact circumstances of certain families. Rather than spouting off about people, maybe try helping them, or better yet, ASKING them to join your organization and help YOU. I don't live in Roulette, but after reading this letter, I can say this, if I did, there is NO way possible I would want to help and be part of your organization. It makes me feel blessed to be a member of the Chamber where I live and where people aren't as hostile as you are coming off to be. We have problems within our community. We plan events and have other people try to make money off them, but that's just life. You roll with the punches, keep your head up, your mouth closed, and keep on doing what we do. And, as to the last part when you told someone to get their own "S------ to do". Have some class, you are REPRESENTING your community!

Anonymous said...

Boo to you Roulette C of C! Please put your address down and I will send you The $5.00 you are so desperate to have! You are bitching about a program that helps children? You need to act a little more professional.

Andy Kulp Jr said...

Well apparently this is turning in to a "see how bad we can slam the Backpack program" party and guess what...I'm not going to play. Again...I tried to get on your map but the person never called me back...that was on Tuesday night so there was ample time to return my call and me to pay my money so let's not go there with the "to cheap to pay to get on the map" thing. I'm thinking now that my call was not returned because you didn't want me on the map because I may be selling food. What a dirty way to play the game...you don't call me back to get on the map and then say I am to cheap to pay...nice game. I had also planned on having the To Fill A Backpack program become a member of the Chamber but I'm not sure that I am interested in being associated with an organization that acts like this. We are not out to take anything away from the Chamber and if the Town Wide Yard Sales is the only thing that they use to raise funds for advertising and stuff then they need to make some changes cuz that isn't how it works. One thing a year cannot raise enough funds to keep your organization going with the work that you do including but not limited to keeping the park in working order, etc.
.
Oh and PS...it is TFABP...not fap and I would appreciate capital letters just like the ones that you get for RCC!
.
As for the slam about us taking over the Easter Egg Hunt...I'm not sure who told you that but we have no plans of taking it over and would never think of it. We planned on having our own on a totally different weekend and we never said it was going to be in Roulette...your defensive mind had us having it there.
.
And now for the "nerve to ask to rent the park"...I'm not sure about that comment. I asked to rent the park for our Chicken BBQ and was going to pay the $50 or $75 (can't remember which it was) to rent it and was going to contact someone this week so that I could process the check. I guess after this weekend I am not interested in the park anymore and you can gladly rent it to someone else...I will find someplace else to have it. I know you are reading this comment so consider this my request for cancellation.
.
The odd remark about finding someplace else to do our fundraising...think about where I live. I pay taxes in Roulette and support local Roulette businesses. We can do our fundraising in any town we please and will continue to do so. I have never been approached by anyone to become a member of the Chamber.
.
It's really sad that it has come to this...I am 46 years old and I feel like I am being taunted by a 10 year old. I'm not going to play the game anymore so post what you want. I have my backing from the people that believe in the program and I guess if I have lost the support of the Chamber members I will just have to go find some more support elsewhere which of course shouldn't be a problem. Organizations that act like this are the type of organizations that have trouble getting members. People don't want to get involved with the drama that they cause.

Really? You are going to get upset and blast an amazing charity about $5?
This is unprofessional and ridiculous.

Anonymous said...

The person writing this post is unprofessional at best. To write a letter, representing a public organization, debasing a member of the community which is served by this organization is absurd. Without a signature on this blasting post, again, a person purportedly speaking on behalf of a civic organization, it would be in everyone's best interest to ignore the comments. However, were I a member of this organization, I would certainly call the person to task for publicly making a statement on behalf of the group. Shame on you, for publically speaking with malice toward a member of the community which you purport to serve. If this is a personal vendetta, don't hide behind the Chamber of Commerce. These comments give no credibility to your organization.

Last time that I checked, it is my yard, my property. I pay the taxes for it. I should not have to pay to have a yard sale on my own yard. This is ridiculous people.

To the good people of Roulette, and Andy Kulp. I'm sorry that the citizens of this town hoped to have a more people-focused, charitable Chamber of Commerce. I am sure that was the goal, but it is obvious that goal has not been reached. It's a shame a 5 dollar bill has brought the town to this. I'm gonna speak to what's on my mind, because I firmly believe this. I think the Chamber is intimidated, wrongly, by the program Andy has started because more people see the good that he does with it, and not many see the good that the Chamber does. I'd rather donate to a program I know will produce results, and to a person whose goal is to better the lives of young children. What has the Chamber done lately? And while I know that there are good hearted people who give their time to the C of C, someone give me concrete evidence of the Chamber actually producing something as measurable for the community in the last 3 years as the To Fill A Backpack program, and I will stand corrected.

I can't speak personally for Andy, but I promise you one thing. Much good will come out of this. I highly doubt that you will see any one person in any one community work as hard as Andy will for his program. You will never see any one person push for people to reignite the Alumni Association and attend the banquet the way Andy has. You will never see someone with such generosity as Andy give back to others because others have given to his program (think about that C of C.) I doubt you will ever see anyone in your community work harder for the common good than Andy will.

God Bless Roulette - I hope that people com together for the purpose of making the place better than when I grew up there.

Hmm.. a thinly veiled ad hominem attack on a local charity. how unprofessional. Methinks Roulette C of C needs some new leadership.

Whoever wrote the above letter needs to go back to school and learn some basic English. The letter shows a complete and total inability to express themselves, and it is glaringly obvious that it targets a single organization and individual.

My English teacher would have given a "D" at best if that was something that had to be turned in, and as far as it being news, It'd rate an "F" in Journalism class.

Epic Fail!

We shall continue to support TFABP, and the superb work that Andy is doing for the kids.

Had we been a member of the Roulette C of C, this is the point at which we'd have walked away and not renewed membership.

The park could easily be supported by some other independent organization, should the need arise. (Or, indeed, by a small group of individuals willing to invest the time and effort.)

As I re-read this post, it appears the issue that prompted the note was merely that $5.00 was not paid to have a yard sale placed on the town-wide map. I didn't read anywhere where a fee was charged for a yard sale, etc., just a convenience fee of $5.00 to be listed on a map. It is clear, now that I've read again, the $5.00 is not the real issue here, but it became the catalyst for a person to vent their personal vendetta against an individual, and the organization that person represents. How petty. Thankfully, this person, and I'm sure all of Roulette knows who it is, has shown their true colors as not a community minded person and therefore, cannot serve the CofC in the best presentation of community benefit. I would hope the person writing this post will step forward, state their name, and, if possible, state clearly their objection to someone not paying to be on the yard sale map. That was the issue, wasn't it? (tongue in cheek)

Wow. I read this article and almost couldn't believe it was posted. After reading all the other comments, I figured there is no point in adding my two cents. But still curious why it was posted, if not signed by the author ? I understand "comments" can be anonymous, but the original post should include the writer's name don't ya think ? What if just anyone wanted to claim to be a member of "whatever organization" and make themselves out to be total idiots. To wit, the definition of a Chamber of Commerce...

A chamber of commerce (also referred to in some circles as a board of trade) is a form of business network, e.g., a local organization of businesses whose goal is to further the interests of businesses. Business owners in towns and cities form these local societies to advocate on behalf of the business community. Local businesses are members, and they elect a board of directors or executive council to set policy for the chamber. The board or council then hires a President, CEO or Executive Director, plus staffing appropriate to size, to run the organization.

So, Roulette C of C, what exactly have you done to promote Roulette as a great place to do business? Mow and rent out a park? Really? Throw fundraisers to be able to mow and rent out a park? Really? How exactly does that fit into the definition of a C of C? Can you tell us? Please do! I'm sure there are many within Roulette Township that would love to hear what you've done to promote others doing or placing businesses here. I know that there's a lot of unemployed people who'd love to know.

As to the original letter, yes, it was highly unprofessional and quite childish. This person is a respected representative of Roulette's business community? I certainly hope not. I also suspect that there was no meeting of the members discussing the offending matters and that the publishing of a letter to a public blog was deemed an acceptable means of handling those matters.

I was once a member of a C of C myself. That particular C of C was headed by the best of the business community in the area, and did everything it could to help local businesses thrive and grow. It also promoted the hell out of the area to new prospective businesses. I have yet to see any of that occur in Roulette (or Potter County in general for that matter). I'm curious as to what the Roulette C of C's informational packet looks like. Hey! Lookie here, we got us a Park! Hyuck.

There are a few very good business owners within the Township. It's a shame that this one person has tarnished not only an organization, but those local businesses as well.

Someone asked why the owner of this blog let this letter fly. I think it's pretty obvious. Some things certainly could stand some change.

I would sign my name to this but it would create WAY more hassle than it's worth. And sorry to say, yes, I live in Roulette.

Anonymous said...

Wow. I think next year I will keep my $5.00 to donate to TFABP, and have my yard sales the weekend before and after.

Andy Jr. does great work and its well noted. Who so ever wrote this article is poorly educated. If they have a position on the Board of a non-for profit corporation. Which I assume the Roulette Chamber of Commerce is? They should be removed immediately.

I never lived in the town of Roulette, but was raised in the Burtville area. I went to the L.L. Smith grade school untill it was shut down. I had family that lived in town. It always amazed me how some of the families in the town always thought they were better then the rest. I can trace my relations to one of the two largest families in Roulette. I moved away from Roulette when I was 17 to serve in the USMC. After that I cam back for a little bit. Growing up I thought that the way life was in the little town of Roulette was the way that every town was. But after traveling the world and being in many larger towns and cities, Roulette life is just plain good country living. It sounds like the people that always thought that they were better are now running the RCC. Grow up, and get a picture of the outside world.
Why bash a family that has done alot for this town. Kulps have been in this town for as long as I know, and have been a great asset to the town. TFABP is a great charity. Last time I was back in town The puny paqrk was nothing to be proud of. Come on RCC get a clue. Just because a person does not apply for a stupid spot on the map, do not bash them if they have not broken state, federal, or municipality law, it is not cause to bash them on a news blog. this is dumb. I am glad to no longer have any family members that live within the township. I feel for the citizens that are still in the town that do not have the right last name because they will never get respect because of it. From what I see, Roulette is turning into another Austin.
I am amazed that Jim allowed this to be published on this blog in the first place.

I started the town wide yard sales in Coudersport many years ago and now two young women have taken over for me- But when I began it,I insisted that no one would be charged to be placed on the map- it's a way for our community to bring in literally thousands of people and it's worked well for us. I suggest you re think your charging a fee to have a yard sale. We averaged over 150 every year and I predict it will continue and not one cent was spent by those having the sales.

Anonymous said...

I was under the impression that you had to pay $5.00 to hold a yard sale in Coudersport during town-wide yard sales. Sure seemed like a lot of extra state police eye-balling going on last year. AND I mean on the people holding yard sales, not the "customers".

What a stirring this has caused. After sitting back it.brings to mind several questions. I am relatively certain I know who the illiterate author of the post was, but I would like to know if that person had the approval and authority to post for the C of C by the members of the board. Either way the chamber owes TFABP an apology. I find it rather comical that the poster would question Andy's ethics. Maybe Andy should get together with his fellow township auditors and call for an audit of the books from the rental of township property. With that in mind, why does a chamber of commerce control and maintain a park that is owned by the township in the first place. And, why do taxpaying residents of Roulette have to pay to rent a piece of crap pavilion that their tax dollars, and grant money paid for? What exactly does the author mean by they are "grandfathered"? Does it mean that their grandfathers ripped.off the people of Roulette too? I would ask this, where is your grandfather's 501c license for not-for-profit? I know Andy has one. Who is your board of directors, who elected them and when do you hold your meetings? Where are your articles of incorporation or by-laws and meeting miinutes? And most importantly why do your elected officials permit this to go on and why have the residents not asked these very same questions of them? It sounds to me like this self proclaimed organization is little more than a couple of people that do what they want, when they want, with little to no oversized or governing. Didn't John Rigas go to prison for similar activities? I think it is time we stop asking the C of C these questions and get our local officials to start answering why they have let this continue and what they are going to do about it.

This letter was written and submitted by the Roulette Chamber of Commerce? I am embarrassed for them.

How completely unprofessional and horribly written.

To the other members of the RCC: I certainly hope that you will let this member(s) go, as he/she/they reflect poorly on your as a whole.

To the town: If these members all agree with this letter, and how awful it makes them look, maybe you should reconsider your vote next time. I'm not sure if the members of the C of C are elected or if it is strictly volunteer. I certainly wouldn't want someone that is so hasty to write such a letter to the public, to be representing my community.

Well enough said looks like this person has never known the true joy of giving of one self and it is sad. The good Lord has always said that when you do something good don't ruin it by looking for praise for then you have lost his praise. Just something to think about. Don't let this ruin it for the fun of all in Potter County. Times like this everyone needs to help one another and exchange treasures which is what this area has always had fun with. Whatever is raised is a plus for the community.

Anonymous said...

Why don't the businesses of Roulette call a meeting and form a TRUE Chamber of Commerce? Go through all of the proper channels and apply for whatever is needed to be officially known as Chamber of Commerce. The park is paid for by grants and so is NOT the property of 2 certain people (that come to my mind) to run. I am sure there are others who would gladly help take care of the park if they didn't have to deal with these other 2 parties who seem to think they own the town. Take over your town Roulette . Sounds like these people are self-appointed . What give them the nerve? One of them is not even an original resident of Roulette.

Anonymous said...

I agree with a few of the previous posts. Sounds to me like someone with the C of C is a bit jealous of the amount of support Andy and the TFABP have accrued. Why is that though? Andy has dedicated so much time and energy into getting the word out, advertising, and fundraising.. What does the C of C do? Well I can tell you they don't do much. I have lived in Roulette all of my life and to be honest, I was not even aware we had a Chamber of Commerce! That, paired with the above letter, are pretty good indicators that the C of C that we do apparently have is a JOKE. It is people like the author of this letter that make people think poorly of our town. I also encourage more people to judge our town based on those like Andy.

Anonymous said...

Obviously the person that wrote this could have benefited from the TFABP program in their child. So sad they missed out. Keep up the great work Andy.

Anonymous said...

I can't imagine saying anything more than what so many others have already posted. I agree on so many points. I would certainly like to give the benefit of the doubt and say, maybe it wasn't really written by a representative of the C of C. Maybe it was written by someone else, trying to give the RCC a bad name. If that's the case, mission accomplished. If not, WOW! This post was very poorly written. If this is really a member of the RCC, this person needs to be released of their "duties". And be sent back to school, apparently. Seriously? Bashing a member of the community that helps children? Not to mention anyone else who needs help. 51 comments, about to be 52, and all I see is bashing of the RCC. I certainly hope the person who wrote the original post realizes the hornets nest they stirred up. Time to get some young blood into the RCC.

KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK BRO!!!

Yours truly,
TDD

Correct me if I am wrong, please. Isn't what Andy Kulp Jr did classified as a charitable act? Also, isn't it not-for-profit? Just a thought from someone who has lived in Roulette for their entire 36 year life.

I agree that this was a very poorly written post and since I am originally from Roulette I am a little embarrassed. Let this be a lesson on sending messages or emails in the heat of emotion. Type it, wait 24 hours then decide if it is worth sending because it can't be taken back.

Since I have moved away from Potter County, I miss the little things like the Town Wide Yard Sales. I know the money from being put on the hand drawn map goes to fund projects that the C of C perform, but frankly, the map is useless in modern times with Facebook and Solomon's Words. The C of C needs to try and find a new legitimate way to raise funds.

So what if someone doesn't want to be on the map? Someone may decide at the last minute that they can sell things and shouldn't have to worry about being chastised about it.

Mr. Andy Kulp is a genuine and sincere guy who really cares about the community, which gets harder to do every day. Let him have another Easter Egg Hunt, it brings joy to the kids and we all know there aren't many choices for the kids in such a rural area.

Why not have two or three choices for eating on the day of the yard sales? It won't take away from the C of C sales. People eat all day during these events and they don't want to come back to the same place they just ate at so they drive to Port or Coudy. People like options.

Why not try and organize a 5K race or obstacle/mud race like what is becoming so popular now in rural areas. Tough Mudders is an extreme version of that but it can be toned down a lot of races and many are popping up in rural PA. Potter County has the land and parking for it. It would bring in hundreds of people or more. These people need food, water, entertainment and good ol' Potter County hospitality.

Lets not bicker and name call over a few bucks. We are all proud Roulette people and we can make it great again. I have many ideas to help but the negativity needs to stop or we all will lose in the end.

I wanted to have a yard sale but now I am too afraid that the scary person who wrote this letter will come knocking at my door demanding $5.00.

I'm not sure who wrote that letter? Regardless, it was in poor taste. Pave-n-Save, Fessenden Construction, Brown Excavating, Fred Haskins, Jim & Linda Ayers, Shelly Morey; are some of the individuals that come to mind when we built the park. I have had several dealings with the Chamber and received their support when I founded the Westend Trailblazers Snowmobile Club. They donated money to pay for the sleigh rides (by Galen Snowman) at the annual Winterfest. They're are a certain few that seem to do all the work at the park & they are to be commended. This post does not sound like any of the members that I knew! I'm assuming it is a newcomer that is not educated, nor right for that job! I'm pretty sure this person is not speaking for all the members! With that said, hopefully this person steps down and the Chamber becomes more transparent to the community. This would help restore community trust and involvement! Keep up the good work, Andy! I remember all the work and time, it requires to start a non-profit organization!! Fortunately, a group of good enthusiast; keep the dream alive for my cause!! Brad Jones
