Thompson Encourages Applications for Assistance to Firefighters Grants

2012 Grant Application Period Open From June 11 – July 6, 2012

Washington, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) this week opened the application period for Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG). The 2012 AFG grant application period will run from June 11, 2012, until July 6, 2012 at 5 p.m.

"The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program offers critical support for our fire and rescue personnel," said Rep. Thompson. “FEMA has a variety of tools available to assist those eligible with the grant application process for 2012."

AFG grants help fire departments and nonaffiliated EMS organizations meet their firefighting and emergency response needs. Grant guidance for this program is available at FEMA's AFG help desk can be reached at (1-866-274-0960), or by email at

"I encourage fire departments and emergency responders to set aside time to begin familiarizing themselves with the application process and program guidance, which are now available on the FEMA website. As always, my district staff is available to provide additional support,” Rep. Thompson added.

Information on Organizations Eligible to Apply:
· Fire departments (career, volunteer, and combination)
· Nonaffiliated emergency medical service (EMS) providers

Information on Items Eligible for Grant Funding:
· Operations and Safety Projects: Training, equipment, personal protective equipment, modifications to facilities, wellness and safety projects;
· Vehicle Acquisition Projects: Firefighting and EMS vehicles;
· Regional Projects (benefiting multiple departments): Training, equipment, personal protective equipment.
