61,000 Pennsylvanians To Lose Cash Assistance August 1

Welfare Cuts Take effect Aug. 1

 WPXI.com
Welfare cuts mean thousands of people will be struggling to pay the bills.
The new state budget eliminates general assistance.  Target 11’s Robin Taylor found out why lawmakers felt the cuts were necessary.
The welfare department said cutting general assistance will save the state close to $150 million, but it also means 61,000 Pennsylvanians will no longer get the money they count on to pay for basic living expenses.  More...

So I guess the guy that drives the cadillac escalade that was in line ahead of me using the access card to buy delmonicoes, T-bones, and shrimp will have to cut back a little....it really makes me feel bad....

10:28pm-- NO !!! It just means the person that needs the help is $hit out of luck now.

There have been generations of families on welfare, excuse me, "assistance" for way too long. It's time to clean it up and make able bodied people go to work. I personally know women who have had babies out of wedlock with various men to stay on "assistance". With the access cards instead of the food stamps they act like they are shopping with a credit card instead of the taxpayers money, which is what they are really using. I am all for people who need help to receive it, but it was never meant to be permanent. All I can say is it's about time.

Well watch out for what u own cause it will be gone before u know it and run deer run run for ur life

I know someone personally who receives child support for her 2 children, 200 every 2 weeks from this welfare program, both of them are on disability getting 700 something a month each, AND the woman works at WalMart and they still receive all this assistance. Oh and they also get food stamps. Why? Bc they keep moving to more expensive houses in order to keep their assistance. The state of Pennsylvania hands out way too much.

I completely agree with all the statements above..BUT..there are some families who actually do work and just need that little extra help but in this situation I don't think the cut back will effect those type families as much. It is good to finally see the state becoming more strict with the welfare situation.

Why don't they also include stories about the 3rd, 4th etc genration of wellies who know how to use the system instead of work and contribute something other than another lazy burden in the system. Maybe all you "what abouts" should rage at the people truly responcible for this and not the ones who've been carrying their worthless loads all this time.

It's about time!!! I am a single mom, I work forty plus hrs a week. I have a decent job and I still struggle!! I have worked very hard for all that I have, which isn't much mind you, but I can hold my head high and proudly say I earned it!!! I however, struggle daily with bills and college loans! I've had my utilities shut off because I had to choose to feed my child over paying my bills. It's hard!!! And ya know there is no help for the WORKING MOM/DAD!!! I am so over coming to work so others can sit home and eat like slobs! We're living off Ramon and they eat like kings!! Cell phones, soda, candy, cigs, tattoos and other "wants" while I can barely afford the necessities!! And who's paying for their wants...ME!!!! It's carnival season....break my heart to tell my child no when you see all the dirty rug rats having a blast on my dollar!!! It's about time some people lose their harness and see what the working people deal with!!! Now, I do agree that some people do need help but this cycle of laziness is sickening! I struggle but at least my child will know the value of a dollar!!!

Attention!!! If you are truly reduced to bashing people on public assistance on this page, you got wayyy too much time and anger on your hands. Think about it.... you keep telling people, "Get a job." when even those who want to work have trouble finding jobs. If you are small enough to make fun of or criticize the lowest of the low in society..... you are pathetic, and guess what else? You're right down there in the gutter with them. By the way, this program is not, and has nothing to do with disability.

ITS ABOUT TIME!

While they're at it, I wish they would re-vamp the food stamp (SNAP) program to be more like the WIC program, limiting the kinds of foods you can get with them to wholesome nutrition foods. I know of one person who get 100s in food stamps every month and spends most of them on cold sandwiches at Sheetz. Something is seriously wrong with that. The help is critical for some families, but abused by many. They changed the name to SNAP: Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, but that is clearly a misnomer. Candy, pop, Twinkies, and all sorts of trash are obtainable with the current program, along with the aforementioned T-bones and shrimp. I don't think that is right either, but at least it is FOOD!

The sad part is that sooo many able bodied people use the system and it ruins it for those who truly need it. I know lots of young people who could work and are too lazy and I know people who truly need help but are too humble to get it. All those who use the system should be ashamed for causing the ones who need it to lose out.

150,000,000 divided by 61,000 equals 2459

$2459.00 is not exactly Cadillac Escalade type money.

Also, from the article, this was bridge money to keep temporary disabled from going into default or being homeless and to help families in major transition (divorce, domestic violence)

So,of course, the good Christian people of Potter county would never resort to emotional, knee jerk, reactionary responses to cutting off help from people who really do need it.

But hey, lets let this state give a foreign company (Royal Dutch Shell) a 1.5 Billion dollar subsidy and be honkey dorey with slamming the door on desperate people? Right? The good Christians of Potter County would never do that.

Drug TEST Them and it would weed out a lot of loooooooosers..

Read the article, people:

"The program mainly benefits childless adults who are temporarily disabled or are waiting for permanent disability benefits.
"This benefit also helps people that are fleeing from domestic violence relationships, so it may force someone to stay in that kind of a situation instead of being able to leave," said Ellie Eisenstat, with Jewish Family & Children's Service."

I really hope no one here every needs help because that is what assistance is for. Are there people who abuse the system? Sure just like they are people who steal from medicaid and medicare and rich folks who cheat on their taxes. So do we shut down medicare and medicaid because of fraud? TANF or temporary aid to families will be what is left. That means if you have no kids and need help you will be out of luck. Also GA or general assistance went to people who were domestic violence victims during the first 30 days for them leaving their abusers. So the funds were used to help these victims escape. Sick people who can't work or who don't qualify for TANF or disability will be hurt by this. There are a lot of good honest people getting GA who will be hurt by this. I find it incredibly sad that because of the actions of a few, all are criticized. I'm sure there are many people that will never admit they receive assistance. The state, in trying to save buck, is sentencing many good people to a life of struggling for food and paying the bills. Some of these people are going to not be able to find better paying jobs to make the difference and they will therefore be forced to go hungry and possibly even become homeless. There were better ways to cut the budget then completely eliminating GA.

The state could probably save $300 million if they make RANDOM drug testing mandatory.....? Those of us who have jobs go through it!

Anonymous said...

I don't mind anyone getting any help if they need it,(there are so many that screw the system too) but there are way too many that are able to work but are just to darn lazy to find a job why should they when they can get everything medical, food stamps, help to pay rent and bills...I feel sorry for the ones that need the help but can't get any..I had to take a drug test for my job why don't they have to take a drug test for welfare? Half of the ones that are on welfare wouldn't be. If they have the money for beer and drugs then you should have the money to support your family..Go Get a J-O-B and see how it feels to work hard for everything you have instead of being handed everything so glad my taxes pay for them to sit and do nothing while we are working so hard to provide for our family

Anybody that doesn't have a job doesn't want a job. I just hope they follow though with this!!

Why is it the responsibility of the government to take care of anyone?

The Greatest Generation declared a war on poverty.

The worst generation (ours) declares a war on poor people (at the repeated instruction of the filthy rich).

Another way Fox News will have helped bring about the fall of our society (which is not just run by a lawless Aussie, but the 2nd largest stock holder is a Saudi Prince, the people that flew the planes into the towers)

This nation has fallen a great ways. Mostly due to the cruel, ignorant, brainwashed masses that cheer when their "owners" step on their neighbors.

Just remember, no taxes for gasholes.

$21 trillion US (more than our economy is worth) illegally hidden in off shore accounts, some of those dollars held by a man you will all vote for for President. (why he'll never show you is tax returns)

We don't need that money. Right? Poor people can die in the streets as far as our "Christian nation" is concerned.

The comments in here make me sick to my stomach. There are people, good moral hard working families hanging on by a thread that will be forced into the streets because of this. "USA! USA! USA! USA!"

Fear not hate mongers... morally bankrupt gluttonous hypocrites (for very very few Americans aren't), you will receive your reward in full. And for eternity.

The fix needs to start with realistic regulations. The limits of ASSISTANCE should not be based upon gross income. We can not pay bills or buy food with money taken by the state and federal government, County/ Township / school taxes, insurances, sales tax, property tax. How much of these do those that abuse the systems pay? The big one to swallow is that all the $ that comes out of the working peoples pay does not get returned to them come income tax time. Now those on assistance pay nothing and yet they are getting 3-4 times more back than those of us that paid into that piggy bank. A lot of land lords who will not rent to working families because the states systems pay A LOT better.!? I myself got laid off and asked for just the medical card for my 2 children to have insurance, no food stamps or cash and nothing for my husband and I. We were told we made $14 too much to get medical care for our children.

Ya know, you people are sickening. Yes, there are alot of people who use the system. And yes, there ARE people who actually need it. My grandfather for example is retired military (25 years in the marine corpse) and with his military benefits and other money he might recieve he cannot get by without this help. So all you idiots that think everybody recieving help are abusing the system can kiss my ass. This man has forgotten more than you idiots will ever learn. He fought for this country and the freedom YOU have. To the moron that said "do random drug testing", yeah thats a great idea at 100 bucks a pop...that would only be $6,100,000 a month every month they done it. Great idea. But more than likely your a democrat and figure we will just raise some more taxes to cover it huh?

This is funny to me. You know why? I go to work everyday so I don't have to worry about it. For years on my way to work I've seen the Wellies sitting out on the stoop smoking their cigarettes and after a hard day work I'll drive by again only to see them in the same spot still smoking talking on their cell. For the ones that actually do need it I hope they can still get it but for the ones that choose to live that way it should only be for necessity. Cigarettes, pop, chips, alcohol and other entertainment are not.

I can see not a lot of you decided to read the article. This site is like the Jerry Springer of news blogs...of the Fox News of news blogs. Let's only post the beginning of the article and we'll skip all the important information...like how this is affecting people teetering on disability...and those fleeing from abusive relationships. We won't post that...we'll just try and get some knee jerk responses from the Red County...
You all should be ashamed of yourselves.

We need to take care of the elderly and military and our children way better than we do however until the money (sorry assistance) sucking leeches are taken off the payroll we as working middle to lower class cannot do that. In order to take care of whats wrong you first have to identify the problem and it starts with the benefit / perks sucking politicians of this country. I'm not ashamed for not being afraid to speak my mind and yes I have a problem with people who get things by cheating and honest people can barely get by. All at the hands of tangled laws and rules set forth by idiots without common sense. You should be ashamed of yourselves for defending these cheaters so that the deserving ones still barely get by.

In the Marines for 25 years and cannot live on his military pension and Medicare and SS? You have GOT to be kidding. That is just crap!

Anonymous said...

"You should be ashamed of yourselves for defending these cheaters so that the deserving ones still barely get by."

The benefits aren't being taken away from the users and abusers. The article CLEARLY states they are being taken away from the border-line disabled and people trying to leave abusive relationships that can't afford it. I am not ashamed of defending those who cannot defend themselves.

This is all funny to me... 1st of all there are more ppl abusing the system then not! People who keep popping out kid after kid so they can rake in the food stamps & cash assistance! & then yes, go in a store & flaunt the access card as though they are proud of themselfs SICK! They get 100% medical for the entire family.. go to doctors AT LEAST once a week... go to the chiropractor, dentist... most of us cant afford a dentist! Not if we work, we have no insurance cuz hell we cant afford the money to be taken from our cks... the wellies need the shit! My opinion they should limit the amount to MAYBE 2 children... if you want more damn kids then that get an effing job & support them, me & my husband sure as hell arent getting u knocked up, why the hell should we pay your lazy ass support for all those kids? I dont much give two shits who likes this post... If your defending the reasons for welfare... you must be a wellie yourself. McDonalds hires all the time, walmart hires, KMart hires.. I think if YOU want to be on welfare, then YOU should be required to do chores for those of us that PAY you.. mow my yard, shovel my drive way... etc...

Didn`t someone say it takes a village to raise a child? Here is a thought.Give the people on assistance a card that can only be used for Essentials,Housing,Utility providers and Stores Instead of cash. Help protect the children for they are going to suffer from this.

Anonymous said...

I hear people all the time saying there are no jobs out there, and I say to them this one or that one is looking for a cleaning person and they say I am not cleaning toilets. So I guess my point is just cause your not willing to do a particular job does not mean there are no jobs out there.

When I see a street full of people in this town with signs that say will work for food then I will believe there are no jobs. but in this town the signs will say need food with the words "will work for" blacked out.

There is a family in this town that has people knock on their door on a regular basis saying they needed money, not one of those begging people said they would work to pay it back they just wanted it handed to them on a silver platter,(it's not the family who you think it is),if those people would have offered to work for it most of them would have been given the money but because of their laziness they were all refused money.

there is a mentally handicapped man in this town who is also up there in years, and in the winter months you see him going down main street with a shovel looking for a few bucks here and there he also cleans windows and does errands for local businesses. This man puts all the lazy people in this county to shame.

I am all for those who need the help getting it, I just think the system needs to weed out the needy from the lazy, and hopefully that is what they are trying to accomplish with these cuts.

feel free to bash this all you want makes no difference to me.

I would support wellfare if they were required to do community service. a small price to pay in exchange for a free roof over your head, free food, free healthcare, free utilities, and some spending cash.

I will lay down in the gutter with you anytime but just remember I gotta get up early in the morning to go to work.

its about time they slowed down the all access train. people abuse it more and more. i work a 12 hour job just to stay afloat while they drive to the store to buy steaks for the third time in a week. i agree some folks need the help. but alot just abuse the system. and it pisses me off and im sure 99% of the working people feel the same way we work for lazy asses to have steak dinners.

I live alone and am on Social Security. I have worked for 40 years and I am having a hard time. A family down the street is on SSI. The husband gets a check. The wife gets a check. The 2 kids get a check the grandfather gets a check Now they moved 2 brothers in that get SSI. 8 SSI checks in one household. They live like kings. I could to if I got that many checks. There is just a path into their house but they go to the local store and bar every day. There is something wrong with this picture.I only got one check in a month not 8. Why would they give them that much money to one house????? I've never made that much money and worked every day. Welfare should be screened and they should have to go to the humun services and get their food. Flour, sugar, milk etc that is healthy. They are home all day so they should have alot of time to cook. NO CASH OR FOODSTAMPS just food.

Standing in line at Wal-Mart just 2
days ago and here I have the main essentials (bread, milk, eggs) and the family in front of me has 7 kids skinny as rails (very well behaved I have to admitt) and the 2
parents (kids called them mom and dad) are not starving. Mom who has 2 completely full carts of donuts, cookies, tv dinners and cereal pays using a access card. Dad then pulls out a neatly folded LARGE wad of cash and flips through to a $10 bill and pays for what wasn't covered under the access card. I pay and go outside to find them loading up in a VERY NICE new van. Mom walks back into the store with 3 of the bags (much less than what they walked out with). Now I cannot say for sure however I can only guess the years old scam that was going to happen at that point. Like when the paper foodstamps were out the kids would go to the store and buy a couple pieces of penny candy with a foodstamp and take home the cash.
Lord knows there's plenty of community service that could be done, 40 hours a week should be mandatory if you're getting free healthcare 100% paid for by others.
