Route 287 In Middlebury Township To Close For Several Days For Fuel Cleanup

Route 287 To Close Monday For Hazmat Cleanup in Tioga County--Detour Set--Anticipate Several Days Closure

Motorists in Tioga County are advised that a section of Route 287 in Middlebury Township will be closed for the hazardous-material (hazmat) cleanup needed following this week’s fuel tanker truck crash, about 1.5 miles north of Route 249.

Traffic for the Route 287 closure will have a signed detour using Routes 249 and 49. In addition, dynamic message signs will be placed at the intersections of Routes 287 and 6, and Routes 287 and 15, in order to alert traffic well ahead of the closure.

The cleanup will involve deep excavation adjacent to and beneath the highway, necessitating the closure for the safety of the traveling public. The roadway will be restored once the spilled fuel is recovered.

The hazmat cleanup contractor plans to work around-the-clock.

It is anticipated the work may take several days to complete.
