Senator Hughes Joins Hundreds to Protest Voter ID/Voter Suppression Law, Supports Repeal Legislation

On July 24, I joined with several of my legislative colleagues, NAACP officials, labor organization officials, faith leaders, senior citizens and hundreds of concerned individuals at a rally on the steps of the State Capitol in Harrisburg to denounce the Voter ID/Voter Supression law, a law that will mean the disenfranchisement of over 750,000 people in Pennsylvania. Almost one in five voters in Philadelphia will be disenfranchised by this law.

June 23, 2012 - Pa. House Republican Leader Mike Turzai Says Voter ID Will Allow Romney to Win Pa. To be clear, this is a law that House Republican Leader Mike Turzai said ‘is going to allow Governor [Mitt] Romney to win the state of Pennsylvania.’
As American citizens, all eligible voters should be allowed to exercise their constitutional right to vote. So much blood, sweat and tears have gone into fighting for the right to vote. This law is not about protecting the integrity of the vote, it is about the very real, systematic disenfranchisement of groups of specific folks - mostly the poor, the elderly, students and racial minorities. It is voter suppression, plain and simple, and we must not stand for it.
I am pleased to announce that I have signed on as co-sponsor to legislation that would repeal the Voter ID Act and increase penalties for voter impersonation in Pennsylvania. The bill’s primary sponsor is Senator Daylin Leach (D-Montgomery/Delaware).
The Voter ID law is about Republican attempts to prevent people from voting in order to win the Presidential election in November. The dubious claims of voter fraud made by the Republican majority and Governor Tom Corbett simply do not exist. That has been proven.
In a recently released legal stipulation, attorneys for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania have confessed that there have been no known cases of voter fraud committed in the state and that they do not plan to offer evidence proving otherwise.

The Department of State has also indicated that burden of voter ID will fall disproportionately on the poor, the elderly, students and racial minorities, and that almost one in five voters in Philadelphia are disenfranchised by this law.
The law will have a significantly adverse impact on women whose married name is different from the name on their birth-certificate, and 27.5 percent of senior citizens over 80 years old not only do not have proper photo ID, but will have a great deal of difficulty traveling to get it.
Hughes Urges Citizens Not to Wait, Get Valid IDs for Voting Now
Voter IdNeed a Photo ID? I Can Help! This voter ID law will have a direct impact on citizens who exercise their right to vote. Starting this November, every voter will be required to show a valid form of identification in order to vote. If you do not have a valid form of identification, the state will provide one to you at no cost. Do not wait until November to obtain it. Take the steps now to make sure that your vote counts in this year’s General Election and all future elections.
Acceptable Forms of ID
The following forms of identification will be accepted in order to vote:
  • Photo IDs issued by the United States government or the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania that includes your name, a photograph, and an expiration date that is not expired

  • U.S. military ID – active duty and retired military (a military or veteran’s ID must designate an expiration date or designate that the expiration date is indefinite). Military dependents’ ID must contain an expiration date

  • Pennsylvania driver’s license or non-drivers license photo ID (that is not more than 12 months past the expiration date or a valid-without-photo driver’s license or a valid-without-photo ID card issued by PennDOT for individuals who have a religious objection to being photographed

  • Employee photo ID issued by Federal, Pennsylvania, PA County or PA Municipal governments that includes your name, a photograph, and an expiration date that is not expired

  • Photo ID issued by an accredited Pennsylvania public or private college, university or seminary that includes your name, a photograph, and an expiration date that is not expired

  • Photo ID issued by a Pennsylvania care facility, including long-term care facilities, assisted living residences or personal care homes that include your name, a photograph, and an expiration date that is not expired

I totally agree with the voter id law in PA.--U needed id to receive a loan, open a checking account, fly on an airplane, enter a federal building and many more. The state of PA will give u and id FREE--I paid 10.00 for a state issued ID every 4 years. If u want to vote--u will get your butt to the DMV and get a photo ID--its called laziness!!!!!!!!!

Of course the dems want to get rid of voter ID. They don't want the dead people to not be able to vote for them.

Of course the Repugs want to institute voter ID. They don't want yer negros and other librals to not be able to vote for Ritchie Rich.

Is it called laziness when you're 85 years old and have been voting for over 60 years, but no longer have a driver's license because your health won't allow it and you have trouble getting transportation to get to the DMV to get an ID card? Or because you live in the city and can't afford a car so you take public transportation to get you everywhere and don't have a need for a current driver's license? Or because you work two or three jobs and have trouble getting to the DMV when it's actually open? We're being made to jump through hoops to be allowed to vote, which will discourage a lot of people who don't have the resources to get the IDs. It's totally bogus and utterly unnecessary.

PA was unable to find an instance where dead people actually voted.

In fact, PA was also unable to find any instance of voter fraud. And the administration was actually forced to admit just that.

Now, voting is actually a constitutional right. And no one is opposed to making sure you are who you are when you register to vote and when you actually vote.

But, THIS law, the way it's written, WILL prevent several h8undred thousand legitimate PA voters from being able to vote.

And that's just wrong.

Common sense is rapidly flying out the window in this country. Why shouldn't you have to show ID to vote?? Of course you should. Like the first poster said, you need ID for many things. Is that suppressing a certain group of people? No, it's simply verifying who you are, what's the big deal, get ID's!!

Vote in November, this one is VERY Important!!!!

I agree 11:45 pm

Screw the NAACP!

I think we should just boycott our votes in November. Thats how you protest something. Not 1 single vote in PA might send a message

You can buy an ID on ebay and be whoever you want to be. How will this stop the democraps?

"Common sense is rapidly flying out the window in this country." Can you hear yourself? All the people who are conservatives claim they want a 'return to traditional values and the old days' yet, how many times in the old days did anyone have to have id to vote? Last election and all the ones before, there were NO NO NO NO documented cases of voter fraud. In fact, One Term Tom Corbett never had a case of voter fraud as Attorney General. Nope, the Rs just want to keep people who vote D out of the booth. Just like they claim they want the gummint to stay out of their lives and NOT get into healthcare, until a woman may want to have reproductive choice. THEN, they want to crawl in her uterous. Ridiculous.

THIS IS FOR YOUR OWN GOOD AND PROTECTION CITIZEN! WE PROMISE!

I wonder which country full of brown people our troops will have to die in when the Repubilicans steal the White House (again)?

Doesn't matter, ol Cheney and Corbett's war profiteering friends at Halliburton will make a boat load on taxpayer bucks wherever it is.

This batch of Republicans are the most dangerous threat to our nation today. They convince you the other guy is taking away your rights, as they take away your rights.

NO VOTER TAX. I WAS BORN HERE, I'M AN AMERICAN AND A VETERAN AND I DON'T HAVE TO PROVE THAT TO YOU OR ANYONE ELSE! NO MATTER WHAT LAW YOU PASS

PAPERS PLEASE? I'LL TELL YOU WHERE YOU CAN PUT YOUR PAPERS, FASCISTS.

Jim Crow is alive and well, living with Republicans everywhere. It's not a coincidence these laws have all been passed this year, mostly by GOP controlled state houses. It's funny how all the alleged patriots want the govt out of their lives so long as it doesn't impact them. This is a well organized national campaign to disenfranchise minority voters and steal the election.

Drug test anyone who wants to vote!

I would think if the government said we are giving out 1 million dollars to anyone that shows up with a Valid photo ID those that are bitching about this law would be the first in line. I don't care if you are a Republican or Democrat (I myself do not vote a straight ticket never had and possibly never will). I personally do not see how this would discourage people. If you are that easily discouraged then most likely your concern for the future of this country your children, and grandchildren ,and its fine citizens does not mean very much to you. So bitch all you want don't get an ID and your vote will not be counted. Case closed.

Wait wait wait. I specifically remember registering to vote...shouldn't that be good enough?
