Galeton Development Corp. News

The monthly meeting of the Galeton Development Corporation was held at the Brick House at 7:30 AM with president Joe Pagano presiding. Joe reported that there has been a good response to the annual membership drive. The corporation meets the third Thursday each month at the Brick House. These meetings are a very good way to keep updated on current events in the community.

Andy Lychalk reported that the Chamber sponsored Fall Fest was well attended and a success, The next event is "A Christmas In A Small town" in late November.

Henry Lush reported that the Rotary Club has already started on plans for the 2013 Woodsmen's Show. The speaker at Rotary tonight will be David Castano, President of the Potter Co. Historical Society. He will speak about the history of Potter Co. tanneries.

Mike Plummer reported that bids have been let for the major updating of the Wetmore Run water system. Much better financing for the project was made possible by Northwest Savings Bank, our local bank.

Galeton School superintendent, Dave Wishard gave a detailed report on school activities. 200 parents and students attended the family reading night program. It was the largest crowd ever. The school passed the state and local audits with no recommendations. The school construction bond issue will be refinanced and will reflect a $100,000. savings. The annual homecoming celebration was a big success with many good comments about the parade and band. The Galeton School was acknowledged by a Federal program as a distinguished school. 130 schools out of 1,600 received this recognition. The school is cooperating with the University of Pittsburgh with the FITC grant program and the local teachers association has set up a mini scholarship program to support this. The school sign on the dike is an on going problem that must be dealt with eventually.

Joe Pagano reported the the main street signs have been completed and Terri Dennison is working with Penndot to get them installed. These will overlook the lake and Collins Memorial Park. Terri and her committee is attending a conference in St. Marys to work on Galeton being designated as the gateway community for the Cherry Springs Dark Skies. Joe also reported that the town rehab program is going very well as is the restoration work in the John J. Collins Memorial Park.

Rev. John Knudson, pastor of the Lighthouse Church of God was welcomed. Pastor Knudson and his family of 7 children are an important addition to the community and his congregation.
