Olean Teen Unhurt When Vehicle Hits Ceres Bridge

An Olean teenager escaped injury when his 2003 Chevrolet Express lost traction on the wet roadway Wednesday night and spun into the Ceres bridge on Route 44, striking it twice.

Xavier M. Smith, 17, of Olean, NY, was wearing his lap and shoulder belt in the 10:20 PM crash.

Trooper Andrew Brothers, of the Kane barracks who investigated, said Smith was traveling northbound on Route 44 in Ceres Township, McKean County, negotiating a right turn on wet roadways when his vehicle drifted over the double yellow line. Smith made an abrupt steering correction, which in turn caused the rear tires to break traction, letting the vehicle begin to fishtail. I then traveled back across the yellow lines, impacting the northbound bridge wall with it's right rear. After initial impact, the vehicle traveled back across the yellow lines, impacting the southbound bridge wall with it's right front, where it bounced off the wall and came to rest facing in a southern direction.

Smith was cited for Driving On Roadways Laned For Traffic.

Bolivar Fire Department and Ambulance responded and assisted at the scene as well as Trooper Eric Tavernier of the New York State Police. The crash occurred just over the border into Pennsylvania.
