PORT ALLEGANY/WRIGHTS HISTORY HERITAGE CLUB MUSEUM - Clyde Johnson is pictured as he gives Lloyd Eastman a tour of the Port Allegany/Wrights History Heritage Club Museum located in the former Methodist Church at Wrights. LOCAL MUSEUM GIVING TOURS BY APPOINTMENT - The Port Allegany/Wrights History Heritage Club Museum, located in Wrights, features local industries such as lumbering, glass manufacturing and the Cameo Doll Factory which produced Kewpie Dolls.

The museum was once the Methodist Church which was built in 1904 and constructed of bricks that were manufactured at the Van Wegan Brick Factory located where the chipping mill is today. According to the History Heritage Club's Clyde Johnson, most of the brick houses located in Port Allegany were built from this company's brick. The building was not used for many years because of declining membership and high overhead. It was being used for storage and needed many repairs before it could be used. The building was purchased by an industrious person who saw a need for a place to house and preserve historical documents and artifacts.

The club is interested in collecting and preserving items from stores, manufacturers or homemade items in Port Allegany and surrounding areas. Displays will show the importance of local industries, past and present. The natural gas importance will also be displayed. Before all is said and done, it is hoped to have all of the schools represented at the museum from the one-room school to the high school and Seneca Highlands Career Technical Center as well as the history of the S. W. Smith Memorial Library.

The museum also hopes to have programs such as spinning wool and flax, quilt making, churning butter, making homemade ice cream, programs on the Civil War, lumbering and glass seminars, genealogy and more.

The club plans to work closely with the Mckean County, Kane, Potter County, Austin and Allegany Historical Societies.

For a unique peek at the past, schedule a visit to the History Heritage Club Museum by calling the numbers listed above or visit the club's website at mavatter@verizon.net. With construction going on, it is currently difficult to schedule regular hours, but regular hours will be scheduled in 2013.
