VERB BALLETS TO PRESENT ‘CARMEN’ AND BENNY GOODMAN AT PITT-BRADFORD

VERB BALLETS TO PRESENT ‘CARMEN’ AND BENNY GOODMAN
AT PITT-BRADFORD

BRADFORD, Pa. – Verb Ballets, a modern dance company from the Cleveland, Ohio, area, will present “Carmen: Story of Passion” and “Eight by Benny,” a dance set to the vibrant music of Big Band leader Benny Goodman at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford next week.

Verb will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 18 in the Bromeley Family Theater in Blaisdell Hall. Tickets are $24 and $26 for the public; $18 and $22 for faculty, staff and alumni; and $10 and $12 for all students. Tickets are available in advance and on the night of the event from the Bromeley box office, which is open from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays.

Choreographed by Richard Dickinson, “Carmen” tells the timeless tale as it unfolds with a new interpretation of the classic characters. The story follows the characters of the original novella by Prosper Merimee about a beautiful gypsy with a fiery temper set to music from Georges Bizet’s opera, “Carmen.”

The Cleveland Plain Dealer said of the piece, “Dickinson’s choreography is a deft blend of classical and modern ideas that convey the tale’s psychological aspects with keen dramatic power.”

The story of “Carmen” contains some adult themes. More information is available at www.verbballets.org.

“Eight by Benny” was originally choreographed by Ohio choreographer Heinz Poll and will feature “Let’s Dance,” “I’m Nobody’s Baby,” “Somebody Stole My Gal” and more.

The company will also perform another piece choreographed by Poll in 1996 and set to the popular music of Maurice Ravel’s “Bolero.”

Verb strives to support and foster emerging talent, present excellence in contemporary choreographers and to revive and honor modern dance classics.
