Galeton Teen and Youth Group had their first meeting

Galeton Teen and Youth Group had their first meeting on 11-16-2013 at the Lighthouse Community Church in Galeton. There were 19 adults present who shared ideas, showed concern, discussed town issues and offered a hand is helping.

Stacy Wilson who has initiated the group opened the meeting at 6:50 by sharing some thoughts and ideas about the group. Stating that the main goal in starting this group is to help the youth in Galeton, get them involved in projects that are beneficial to not only the town but to themselves, have a tutoring program for students who are struggling and make events and places for young adults to gather giving them a positive outlook.

Some things that will be happening soon are:
-logo contest for the teens
-getting DARE and MADD back in Galeton

Some questions were raised about where community leaders were and why they weren’t at this meeting. Question was asked if local law enforcement officers were invited. They were and unfortunately had other obligations to take care of however they have been contacted and will be at future meetings. It was stated that we need to get school and police together to join in these efforts to have total success. It was pointed out the school has been made aware of this group and would like to have a representative at these meetings to see how we can all be working together.

It was mentioned that it was so nice to see that for the first time, community members/parent are standing up to do something, to make a change for the good of the children in our community.

A suggestion was made to have contacts for AA available to those who may already be involved in Drugs and Alcohol . To have younger generations who have had addictions and fought their battle getting away from them come together and help the youth.

An idea was expressed about having sex related topics available as well, teenage pregnancy is a problem. This being for prevention and education.

There was a 4-H representative at the meeting. She talked about strengthening the family unit being very beneficial and how to pull from.

A suggestion was made about writing a letter to the Gale Foundation about using money to fix up the Community building as a possible place to meet. Teri Batterson was asked to write a letter, and it will be accompanied by a petition that will be signed by community members, in attempt to keep the Community Building available for the community.

A question was raised: How can we as parents know what more about the different drugs are and how teen s are ‘using’? Pastor John Knudson said that the week after thanksgiving there is going to be a seminar held at the school for the teachers, about this same topic. He will find out if this representative would be willing to come and do a presentation for members of the community as well.

Other conversation took place during the meeting and some very good ideas were shared. Remember, we are starting out and can’t do everything all at once. But, if we all work together, we will see our community changed!

Overall, it was a great meeting and lots of positive input was offered. We invited and encourage any and everyone to join us as we make plans in helping create a better, brighter future for the youth in the Galeton Community.

Our next meeting will be held on Friday, November 30 at 6:30pm at the Lighthouse Community Church on Sherman Street. We all hope to see you there.

To the people who said it would be nice to see this kind of action in your towns,
We are just a few conserned parents and grand parents who started chatting on FB after a tragidy struck our town. We just decided it was time for some action and started the ball rolling! We dont have tons of experience as single people, but as a group , we are turning out to be pretty darn smart!!!! If you have friends, and they have friends, and they have friends..... you can really get things done!!! Maybe one of you should give it a try, surely cant hurt! Good luck and God Bless!

I think this is a great idea. Other communities should look at bringing something similar to their towns. For those of you who are negative about what Galeton is trying to do ~ don't knock it until you try it. No wonder there so much crime, drugs and alcohol abuse amongst our youth. Most would love to have something to do. They get in trouble out of boredom and peer pressure. If they have the tools and guidance available to them they will take the right path!

Just curious 2:18 why would this not work in Coudersport?

Alcohol & Drug Abuse Services in Port Allegany has a great prevention staff. they frequently go into the community and if asked may be able to do a presentation for parents. just an idea.

Two thumbs up.

If parents and groups like this don't look after our young ... you know who will, and they aren't who we want teaching our youth.
