Update:NATE BROOKENS IS TALKING!!!

Nate Brookens
NATE IS TALKING!!!!
I just heard from my daughter, Beth. She received a call from Mercy Hospital this morning. NATE IS TALKING!!!! For the first time since his accident on August 25th, which left him with severe brain damage and in a comatose state. This morning he answered questions the speech therapist asked - as she always does, never getting a response – until today! Nate knew his name, he knew he was in Pittsburgh and he knew his nickname was Toolbox!!

We were with him last weekend. He was barely managing a feeble grunt, not using his voice at all. But we could tell he wanted to talk. However, he did do a number of “new” things, such as grabbing the wheel of his chair with his right hand and pushing himself down the hall about 30 feet. He took hold of his sister, Liz’s, arm and put it around his neck, then proceeded to smile. He also did several arm wrestles with Liz and won a couple! He nodded an affirmative several times, showing that he understood what we were saying to him. He has been taking water from a spoon regularly. When shown an album his girlfriend, Britty, had made for him, he grabbed and held it with his right hand - the emotion on his face was not to be missed. He recognized her.

Yet, with all this good stuff happening, he was still in a comatose state at that time. His “awake” times would come and go. We knew he had to be close to “taking off” as they term it – waking up and staying awake. While we were there, he would be “aware” but came in and out of it often through the day. We are still not sure he is officially confirmed as being no longer comatose.

We watched while PT put him on a Standing Machine. It is obvious he doesn’t like it. The process of stretching him to full standing position is painful. But we learned he is now helping with his right foot when they are walking him. He does not use his left arm or leg – yet. Some surgery, and lots more therapy and healing yet to come.

We sang to him, prayed over him, and read Scripture aloud, one passage of which was Genesis 1:3 to him, “And God said, ‘Let there be Light, and there was Light…!’” That is how we have felt led to pray for him of late - that God would turn on The Light in his mind. And it is happening.

We would ask our praying friends to continue to remember Nate during the months of therapy that lie ahead. He will soon be discharged to a long-term facility that offers the intense therapy and quality care he needs. And we are praying for a miracle - that he will be close to home. Thus far, the long-term care looks to be a few hours in any direction.

To God be the Glory, Great Things He Has Done…!!

Gratefully,
Ann DeHaven

Not that we know. It has not been determined but we have been told there are locations closer to home. Hope so! Beth has had to go back to her job and traveling that far would mean she would hardly ever get to see him. That ain't gonna happen... : )
