Happy New Years from Potter County Dairy Promotion
Happy New Years from Potter County Dairy Promotion
Lillian Thompson, 2013 / 2014 Potter County Dairy Princess |
Below is a delicious recipe that contains many healthy nutrients from dairy products such as protein, and vitamins and minerals. What a way to start off the first day of the new year, with energy and vitality.
Remember, resolving to consume 3 servings of dairy every day can help lead to better health.
Stuffed French Toast
Ingredients:
½ cup Neufchatel cheese
1 tbsp. of honey
1 pint of raspberries (fresh or frozen)
1 cup of chopped peach (fresh or frozen)
8 slices of bread (whole wheat or whole grain adds healthy fiber)
1 cup of beaten eggs (home raised or local are best)
1 cup of milk (whole, 2%, 1%, or skim)
1 tsp. of vanilla extract
1 cup of maple syrup (Potter county of course)
Directions
1. Stir together the cheese, honey, ½ cup of raspberries, and ½ cup of peaches in a medium bowl. Spread the cheese mixture on 4 slices of bread. Top with the remaining slices of bread.
2. Beat the eggs, milk, and vanilla extract in a 2 quart shallow baking dish with a fork or a whisk. Press the sandwiches into the milk mixture and turn to coat.
3. Lightly cover the bottom of a 12 inch nonstick skillet with melted butter. Place the sandwiches in the pan and cook until they are lightly browned and the cheese is melted.
4. Place each sandwich on a plate and divide the remaining fruit among the plates. Serve with maple syrup.
Thank you for supporting your local dairy farmers!

Galeton Weather report December
Galeton Weather report December
December was a warm and cold month. Fairly typical for the start of winter. The first week was warm with a few days in the low 50's. Mid month it turned cold, then it warmed up and then very cold with morning lows in the single digits. The 28th was a beautiful sunny day with readings in the 40's. Overnight things changed. The day started out with rain changing to a heavy wet snow. Overnight it froze up and everything was very icy. Happily the power stayed on in spite of many fallen branches.
We recorded 3.45" of rain and melted precipitation. 17.6" of snow was measured. This compares to last year with 5.46" of rain and melted precipitation and 19.8" of snow. We had 20 days with 1" or more of snow of the ground. The greatest snow depth was 7" on the 15th. We recorded fog on 7 days and glaze on the 9th.
For 2013 we received 41.31" of rain which is 1.28" below normal and 49.14" of snow which is 5" below normal.
Happy New Year

Rep. Martin Causer Reminds You To Party Safely
- Plan a safe way home before attending any festivities where you will be drinking.
- Always designate a sober driver.
- If you’re impaired and don’t have a designated driver, call a sober friend or family member.
- If you happen to see a drunk driver on the road, call 911.
- And remember, friends don’t let friends drive drunk. If you know someone who is about to drive while impaired, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to safely get where they are going.

Corbett makes a mean New Year for millions of Pennsylvanians
Corbett makes a mean New Year for millions of Pennsylvanians
Cruel, destructive policies make Pennsylvanians poorer, sicker
Harrisburg – Today, John Hanger stated his concern about the plight of Pennsylvania’s low-wage working families as 2014 dawns with no increase in the minimum wage and no Medicaid expansion.
“In 13 states, low-wage workers will wake up to a raise on January 1 when an increase in the minimum wage goes into effect,” said Hanger. “But not in Pennsylvania. In 26 states, millions of uninsured people will have health care coverage starting on January 1. But not in Tom Corbett’s cruel Pennsylvania. Tom Corbett’s policy of punishing the Commonwealth’s most vulnerable citizens will keep them poorer, sicker and cause hundreds of premature deaths.”
“Corbett opposes raising the minimum wage from its current $7.25 an hour. At that rate, a worker makes $15,080 a year – not enough to cover housing, food, medicine and transportation,” said Hanger. “Raising the minimum wage to $10.10, as I would do, would recognize the dignity of work and create a little breathing room for these families. And it would help the economy. That money would be quickly put to work buying necessities.”
“Corbett said “no” to the federal government’s offer to pay for expanding Medicaid coverage. That means 700,000 uninsured Pennsylvanians will wake up on January 1 without the security of knowing they can visit a doctor or get emergency medical care without risking financial catastrophe,” continued Hanger. “It means that starting Wednesday, Pennsylvania loses $10 million each and every day that would have gone to hospitals and other health care providers to pay for medical treatments. It means that because they don’t have health insurance, hundreds of Pennsylvanians will die because they could not access decent health care.“
“On day one of my administration,” vowed Hanger. “I will expand Medicaid in Pennsylvania.”
“Tom Corbett’s mean, destructive policies will make a miserable 2014 for millions of Pennsylvanians. The silver lining is that in November 2014, we can fire Corbett and bring in a brighter, more prosperous and more compassionate New Year in 2015,” concluded Hanger.”

House Numbers Being Sold By Emergency Services
House Numbers Being Sold By Emergency Services
“Reflective signs are highly visible. Posted at the end of a driveway, they could save emergency responders precious time, potentially saving lives and property.”
Some county and local governments in Pennsylvania have mandated that each property owner acquire and post an official reflective sign. There are currently no such ordinances in Potter County. Cost for each sign ranges from $15 to $20. Proceeds support volunteer fire and ambulance services.
To arrange for sign purchases, contact local emergency service agencies or call the Potter County Department of Emergency Services at 274-8900.

Regional Workforce Study Pinpoints Challenges
Regional Workforce Study Pinpoints Challenges
Potter County Today
- Manufacturing jobs in the region have been declining and are expected to fall even more, from about 17,000 at the time of the study to 15,800 by the start of 2015.
- Population loss region-wide was four percent from 2000 to 2010, which makes it harder to meet needs for infrastructure, education and government services. Potter County’s population declined by 3.4 percent between 2000 and 2010, from 18,080 to 17,457. Most or all of the six counties will continue to lose population over the next five years. At the same time, there will be greater growth in the two population groups (ages 0-17 and 65-plus) who create the greatest demand on services.
- Median age will continue to rise. By 2030, it will be 43.9 in Potter County. Statewide, the median age now stands at 40.1.
- Job growth is expected in gas and oil extraction. More modest growth is expected in finance/insurance; waste management; professional, scientific and technical services; real estate; recreation/entertainment; private educational services; construction; health care; transportation/warehousing; and wholesale trade.
- Steady job decreases are expected in manufacturing (see above); the information sector (which includes media, communications, data processing and publishing); company management; government; retail trade; agriculture and utilities.

Monday Morning Insights
As we celebrate the New Year, we always think about resolutions. Normally, those resolutions revolve around losing something: losing weight, quitting a bad habit, etc. Sometimes, it involves starting something new: exercising more, drinking more water, cleaning up your credit card debt. We do these individually, expecting that we will meet our personal goals by ourselves. But how successful is that?
Do you know which weight loss program is by far the most successful? Weight Watchers. Why? It is not the food, or counting points, but it is the meetings. The meetings give members a vision of their next goal to achieve and the resources to achieve those goals.
Matthew 6:22-23 says, “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness.”
1) When we think about our eyes, we think about the purpose of them: to provide us with a clear vision of what is in front of us and what is ahead. When I got my contacts at the age of fourteen, I was so excited. When I put them in my eyes for the first time, I noticed something. The contact lens sharpened my vision and perception of the things around me.
2) Eyes not only provide vision, but the ability to perceive. Proverbs 29:18 says, “Where there is no vision, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction.” People not only need a vision to keep moving forward, but need friends to help them keep moving forward. Weight Watchers is not only successful because of their goal setting, but also the accountability achieved when the group meets for their weekly meetings. Members share in each other’s triumphs and failures together. In the same way, the church body should share in each other’s strengths and failures as the body of Christ moves together on their faith journey.
What people, circumstances or resources has God provided you with to help you achieve a vision for the coming year or reach your goals?

Teaching Parenting Skills To Inmates; Volunteers Needed
Teaching Parenting Skills To Inmates; Volunteers Needed
Melissa Gee from Potter County Human Services shared details of “Inside Out Dad” at last week’s meeting of the Potter County Board of Commissioners. A 12-chapter program emphasizes development of effective parenting and adjustment skills for inmates. “We’re hoping that we may be able to tap into a group of retired teachers, clergy and others to volunteer,” Gee said. Sessions would probably be held once a week, she added. Gee can be reached at 814-544-7341.

First Presbyterian and Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church of Galeton, 12-29-13
First Presbyterian and Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church of Galeton, 12-29-13
by Martha Pennell,
mpennell@northernpottersd.org
The Session and the Deacons of First Presbyterian met after worship today to discuss the duties and plans of each group in leading the congregation in 2014.
The Fellowship dinner of the two congregations will be held at Saint Paul’s on Sunday, January 5th, at 4 pm. Walt and Barb Schaffer will be our hosts.
The Shared Ministry Committee of the two congregations will meet at Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church on Wednesday, January 8th, at 7 pm.
A benefit dinner (soup, beverage, and dessert) for Ila Group will be held Thursday, January 9th, from 4 to 6 pm at the First Presbyterian Christian Education building. Cost is $7 for adults, $5 for children, and free for children ages five years and under. There will be a Chinese auction through the evening.
“Line up With Jesus” was the title of Pastor Tom’s sermon on the first Sunday after Christmas.
Pastor Tom opened his sermon with a rhyme: God has a plan, forever is its span, Jesus is the man!
He told us that part of God’s plan is to bring us to glory, which means completion, unity, and full kinship with the rest of creation. We are pressing on to perfection. Jesus has known pain and suffering, met with temptation, and is a pioneer of spiritual excellence. Pastor Tom said that Jesus moves darkness to light, the blind to sight and the captive to freedom. He keeps us moving toward glory; we are receivers of his richness.
Tom told us a story about a sail boat ride he once took. As his mariner friend Starling turned the tiller to get wind into the sail, water sprayed above his head and a rainbow was visible. This experience was likened by Pastor Tom to being in line with Jesus, concluding that the Gospel states that Jesus saves, but we need to line up with him so the wind fills our sails!
From our Unison Prayer: God, we thank you for the gifts of life. Turn us to you as we complete one year and begin another. Be our companion and our comforter so we don’t grow weary in well-doing. Move us to use our time to build your kingdom and be blessings to our families, our friends and our community.
Amen.
