Eastern Sports & Outdoor Show Update

Reed Exhibitions has decided to postpone, for now, the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show given the controversy surrounding its decision to limit the sale or display of modern sporting rifles (also called ARs) at the event. The show was scheduled to take place February 2-10 in Harrisburg, PA.

Refunds will be provided for each paid admission ticket purchased thru the web based official on-line Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show web site before 10:00am Eastern Standard Time on January 24, 2013. We will detail the refund process on our web site and in an additional email by January 31, 2013.

"Our original decision not to include certain products in the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show this year was made in order to preserve the event's historical focus on the hunting and fishing traditions enjoyed by American families," said Chet Burchett, Reed Exhibitions President for the Americas. "In the current climate, we felt that the presence of MSRs would distract from the theme of hunting and fishing, disrupting the broader experience of our guests. This was intended simply as a product decision, of the type event organizers need to make every day.

"It has become very clear to us after speaking with our customers that the event could not be held because the atmosphere of this year's show would not be conducive to an event that is designed to provide family enjoyment. It is unfortunate that in the current emotionally charged atmosphere this celebratory event has become overshadowed by a decision that directly affected a small percentage of more than 1,000 exhibits showcasing products and services for those interested in hunting and fishing.

"ESS has long been proud to participate in the preservation and promotion of hunting and fishing traditions, and we hope that as the national debate clarifies, we will have an opportunity to consider rescheduling the event when the time is right to focus on the themes it celebrates."

Sorry to see that the NRA (why don't they change the name to National Gun Manufacturers Association?) and its neanderthal element has scored a victory.
I have proudly thrown in the trash my NRA membership renewal. That's a statement I can make and I encourage others who have a conscience to do the same.

I encourage people to join the NRA there fighting for your right to have a gun of your choseing. Not a gun the Government tells you, you can have. I 'm a hunter and don't have a Ar style rifle, but i like to think i have the right to have 1 if i chose to do so.

Why Young Women Want AR-15s

Americans have the right to an efficient weapon for home defense.

Sorry, President Obama. As young women, we prefer an AR-15 “assault” rifle with a 30-round magazine for self-defense.

In fact, we wouldn’t want to be stuck at home without one. In the wake of mass murders like Sandy Hook and the horrific rapes and murders of thousands of women each year, pepper spray, mace, or five-round handheld pistols aren’t going to cut it.

So what’s a girl to do? When choosing our tool for home defense, we want the best — in accuracy, handling, and aesthetics. The best choice by all three criteria is — hands down — the AR-15.

AR-15s are the most popular rifle in the U.S.; more than 3 million Americans own one. And its popularity isn’t with criminals — assault rifles account for only 0.6 percent of murders every year. Rather, the semi-automatic AR-15 is the gun of choice for many hunters, target shooters, and home defenders.

Critics pin the allure of AR-15 on Hollywood (think Angelina Jolie’s “Wait, why do I get the girl gun?” in Mr. and Mrs. Smith), video games, and the military, but women especially haven’t chosen this weapon on a whim.

Our goal when defending against a home invader is simple: to hit where we aim. One shouldn’t underestimate the value of target practice, but using an accurate weapon is the key to hitting a target with ease and confidence.

The AR-15 is lightweight and practical. As light as five pounds, it produces low levels of recoil, and it’s easy to shoot. It also looks intimidating, which is what you want when facing an assailant or intruder. But don’t let its appearance intimidate you. Assault rifles such as the AR-15 aren’t more “dangerous,” as liberals claim. They don’t fire faster than other rifles, and don’t normally contain more powerful ammunition.

Accuracy? Check. Ease in handling? Check. Intimidation factor? Check. An AR-15 might be a woman’s best friend.

We are rational women who, as law-abiding citizens, understand the need — and the right — to defend ourselves. We don’t want to be caught underprepared in the kind of desperate situation that happens too frequently to people across America.

So where do you all draw the line on what a citizen should be able to own? The 2nd Amend. says the right to bear arms. "Arms" is a vague term that could mean any weapon on earth. Should a person be allowed to own an RPG? Tank? Scud Missile? Fighter Jet? I would hope you don't. I don't think that line being drawn back to high capacity semi-auto rifles is that outrageous. And no need to repeat the "next it will be all guns" argument. I've heard it all. The President has no part in repealing an amendment. It won't happen. I suggest the NRA use it's money to help find solutions to these problems instead of it being used in constant defiance. Maybe start with some of Wayne LaPierre's $970,588 yearly salary.

i'm a responsible gun owner, of AR15's and an AK. I'm also a veteran familar with REAL assault rifles: M16, M4, and M60.

i'll answer your question with one of my own- "what does sport have anything to do with the Second Amendment?"

Are Black rifles used for hunting? doesnt matter. are they used for target shooting? doesnt matter. how about defense? doesnt matter. "shall not be infringed." period. you can talk about hunting, you can talk abotu shooting or defense, you can talk about wants and needs; no if it matters- its a RIGHT earned by those like myself who carried REAL assault rifles, granted to all law-abiding Americans, like like all the other rights.

you want to comment back? go ahead, you have that right too. i have no problems allowing you to practice the First even though you're trying to take my Second; i served to defend all of them.

Leaning on the second amendment, then you must also agree/respect/support another aspect that our founders also incorporated into our founding laws. Ensuring that laws can change with the times. They realized they didn't have all the answers and could not ever imagine the times we are living in today.

Debating on here if fun and emotional and no one opinion is right or wrong...your best bet is to write your legislators and let them know what you think. I'd be interested how many of the above have done the true American act and sent a letter. They will be the ones determining this outcome, end of story.

Send a letter is too much trouble let alone studying, graduating from college, going to law school, running for office, and actually making a difference. That's what people say where I live to those that complain about everything the govt. does. If you don't like it do something about it. Wow, 3:40, thank you!- for your service and for your understanding of the critical importance of the 2nd Amendment to the Bill or RIGHTS. And 4:02, laws can and do change, RIGHTS do not. The RIGHT to keep and bear arms, especially in the context of self-preservation be it from individuals who would do us harm or by a tryanical government, is not uniquely American, it is recognized back into the earliest history of mankind, emanating from Natural Law. We Americans who understand history and take responsibility for our own (and your) protection will not yield our rights, ever. As Lincoln said at Gettysburg, it is up to the living 'that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth'.

Will our Sheriff support his Oath or will he weenie out?

From Florida to California, a growing number of the nation's sheriffs are standing up to gun control measures proposed by both the administration and Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.).

Many law enforcement officials have written letters to President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden voicing their concerns over what they believe is an effort to infringe upon the Second Amendment.

In New Mexico, 30 of the state's 33 county sheriffs have reminded state lawmakers that they are under oath to support the U.S. Constitution, and that includes the Second Amendment.

CNSNews.com previously reported that 28 of the 29 sheriff's in Utah sent a letter to President Obama stating that they will not enforce any new gun laws they believe to be unconstitutional.

A host of Oregon sheriffs have said that they will not comply with any new unconstitutional gun regulations:
•Sheriff Craig Zanni wrote, "I have and will continue to uphold my Oath of Office including supporting the Second Amendment," in a letter to Coos County citizens.
•Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin said he would refuse to enforce any new Federal gun law he believes is unconstitutional.
•In a letter to Vice President Joe Biden, Grant County Sheriff, Glenn Palmer writes: "I will not tolerate nor will I permit any federal incursion within the exterior boundaries of Grant County, Oregon, where any type of gun control legislation aimed at disarming law -abiding citizens is the goal or objective."
•Sheriff Gil Gilbertson of Josephine County told Biden in a letter: "Any rule, regulation, or executive order repugnant to the constitutional rights of the citizens of this County will be ignored by this office."
•Sheriff Tim Mueller of Linn County, Oregon says his department will not participate in any overreaching and unconstitutional federal firearms restrictions.

In California, Sheriff Adam Christianson of Stanislaus County wrote to the vice president: "I refuse to take firearms from law abiding citizens and will not turn law-abiding citizens into criminals by enforcing useless gun control legislation."

A letter sent to Sen. Dianne Feinstein from Sheriff Jon Lopey of Siskiyou County, California states: "Our founding fathers got it right and many politicians are getting it wrong."

In Missouri, Lawrence County Sheriff Brad Delay tells the president: "I will...rise to the defense and aid of all Americans should the federal government attempt to enact any legislation, or executive order that impedes, erodes, or otherwise diminishes their constitutional right to keep and bear arms."

At a town hall meeting, Sheriff Denny Peyman of Jackson County, Kentucky told citizens "you are never going to pull a gun from Jackson County."

Smith County, Texas Sheriff, Larry Smith has said, "I will not enforce an unconstitutional law against any citizen in Smith County. It just won't happen."

In Florida, Martin County Sheriff, Bill Snyder said that he will not enforce federal gun laws: "Local law enforcement authorities are not empowered to enforce Federal law," Snyder said.

God forbid it ever happens, but what if a war erupts on our dirt? Their are some pretty unstable people abroad that could invade our country as we have theirs. What are all you YUPPIES gunna do then? NO guns to protect yourselves,our military (that are taking such cuts in pay and benefits may not exist)will be way too busy to try to gaurd every small town like most of us live in. I know I feel a lot better knowing my family has the weapons and knowledge of how to use them if they are needed to protect ourselves. You people need to WAKE THE HELL UP! How long have drugs been illegal (FOREVER) but drug addicts and criminals still have ample supplies. It will be the same with guns. This is just the next step to destroy our country we've already exhausted our military, created such extreme debt we are pretty much owned by someone else anyhow, now lets disarm so we can be easily overtaken. The Second Ammendment is not about hunting or target shooting.

It is about protecting ourselves from a totalitarian government.

It safeguards peoples' basic rights of individual self determination.

It's the Bill of Rights, not the Bill of Privileges. If the Second goes, the rest of our Rights will soon cease to be.

Taking Rights from law-abiding citizens only makes criminals safer.

The other Amendments have taken a beating under Bush and Obama.

Privacy, Rights and Rule of Law have gone out the window. Patriot Act, TSA, and Homeland Insecurity are the takers.

Ditching the 2nd Amendment will make erasing the other Amendments

Unfortunately, governments in general and politicians specifically have a history of adding to existing laws.

Enter the "salami tactic" where citizens lose rights a piece at a time.

I firmly believe that once banning starts it will just be the beginning of a downward spiral.

The laws will only apply to us honest owners who have not and never intend to do harm to the populace.

Criminals and crazed shooters will not be deterred for they are already breaking existing laws.

Why is it that some people feel like they need to tell stable law-abiding people what they can and cannot have?

It does not matter what "assault-style" weapons are used for. We should be FREE to own them and use them for whatever legal purpose we desire and shoot as many rounds through them as we like.

Biden in his own speech refers to removing these weapons so the bad people can't use them. These "bad" people will not care how, where, when, and who they will use ANY type of weapon. As a person co-leading this nation, I would have thought it apparent that what makes a criminal a criminal...is not abiding by the law. Which makes new laws useless.

A back alley deal will still put semi or even fully automatic weapons in the wrong hands.

If the liberals get their way with their anti-gun agenda...all you anti-gun nuts need to post a sign in your front yard stating, "This is a gun-free home." to voice you're support for their efforts.

Then, I'll run around, note your address, and post it in the local paper. Sounds fair to me.

I am not for the assault weapon ban but I can’t stand the NRA. This is more proof that they just care about gun sales and will hurt other people to get their way. There are plenty of other businesses and people in the fishing, hunting, and camping industry who used this show to grow their business. The NRA just hurt every one of these companies.

And to the person who posted that the Bushmaster wasn’t used. Do you believe everything that supports your argument automatically? One person on MSNBC reports some misinformation on TV and you believe it to be true. Don’t you think that there is a reason nobody else picked it up and it was never mentioned again? It is because it is not true or unverifiable. This is the same station that made multiple errors trying to get info out as quick as possible without verifying any of it (ex: name of the shooter).
