The third annual Kid’s Fishing Derby sponsored by the Friends of Lyman Run

The third annual Kid’s Fishing Derby sponsored by the Friends of Lyman Run will be held on Saturday, May 18. This event is for kids aged 12 and under. There will be lots of prizes awarded at the end of the derby as well as hand out gifts. The derby is free and free lunch is also provided for the kids but available for a donation for adults. All registered children must be accompanied by their parents or a designated guardian/adult. Fishing gear and bait is not provided so parents should bring that along as well as chairs to sit in stream-side and appropriate footwear, jackets and bug spray if needed.

Official registration will begin at 9:30 am. The fishing for the derby will begin when the whistle blows at 10:00 am and will run until 12:30 am (again, when the whistle blows). All fish caught will need to be brought over to the measuring station and entered. There are prizes for various age groups as well as size and reaching the legal limit of fish so kids should bring their fish over as soon as they are caught. The fish measuring tent will be located across from the foot bridge below the spillway. Areas open for derby fishing will be the main spillway basin below the dam and the section of stream going all the way down to the old ford area. The area will be fenced off so the fish for the derby will stick around. This area will be off limits to all other fishing activity from Thursday May 16 until Sunday, May 19. Anyone fishing in this area outside of the derby will be prosecuted! There will be lots of trophy fish for the kids to catch.

Lunch will begin to be served between 11 and 11:30 am. A free lunch of hot dogs, pizza, chips and drink will be given to each of the registered participants and will be available for a donation for the adults who are there with the kids. Derby fishing will conclude at 12:30 so that all can get over to the pavilion where the prizes will be awarded from 1:00 pm.

The Friends of Lyman Run would like to thank all the businesses who donated prizes and funds towards this event as well as the volunteers who have donated their hours to making this derby happen. FOLR is still accepting donations and any business wishing to help out can send a check made out to PA. Parks and Forests Foundation (P.P.F.F.), and please write FOLR in the memo line or add to the payment line. Mail it to:

Friends of Lyman Run, 454 Lyman Run Road, Galeton, PA 16922

FOLR is a 501(c) 3 non-profit chapter of PPFF and donations are tax deductible to the full extend allowed by law for non-profit charities. Please direct any questions to Maxine Harrison at (814) 435- 2518.

The derby will take place rain or shine! This is a great and fun way to introduce kids to fishing and also to spending a great day outdoors exploring nature. Bring the kids, bring the lawn chairs, bring the rain ponchos…but please leave your dogs at home as they are NOT permitted at this event, sorry!
